Graham Rahal

Damn. Just... damn.

http :// www .speedtv,com /articles/auto/champcar/34317/

Graham Rahal has yet to be officially confirmed as a Champ Car driver
for Newman/Haas Racing in 2007 but the talented 17-year-old continued
his impressive audition Wednesday afternoon at Mercedes Sugarland Raceway.

A week after matching lap times at Homestead, Fla. with three-time champ
Sebastien Bourdais, Rahal smoked the track record at MSR by eight-tenths
of a second. The son of the three-time CART champion toured the
2.38-mile road course in 1:10.37 in Newman/Haas’ Lola-Cosworth. The old
mark of 1:11.29 was turned in last winter by former F1 driver Antonio
Pizzonia for Rocketsports.

“I just spoke with him on the phone and he’s happy with his progress,”
said Bobby Rahal. “He seems to be picking things up nicely and he also
had a good test at Homestead.”

Young Rahal, who finished second in the Atlantic series this season and
scored the most victories (five), was sharing the track with PKV
Racing's new driver, Neel Jani and the Swiss GP2 front-runner had just
cracked the 1:12.00 barrier when rains ended practice for the day.

Last week, A1GP champ Alex Premat of France turned the quickest lap of
1:11.860 for MiJack/Conquest Racing during a three-team Champ Car test
session.

Are those "Damn's" there to describe Rahal's impressive performance?
Surely they do not represent any angst? Do tell.

I'll give you a hint: I had the same reaction when I found out that
Graham had gone to the Misano circuit in Italy (his first time at the
track) and tested an F3000 car (his first time in an F3000 car) and was
pacing the circuit a second and a half faster than the regular driver
after his first half-dozen laps, and was running almost a second a lap
quicker than the pole time from the 2005 F3000 race at that circuit.

Oh, I thought the Damn's were because he is another American who has yet
to be confirmed in ChampCar yet.

It's a crying shame Graham Rahal will not be in GP2 in 2007.

Maybe if his daddy wasn't busy pimping for TG over the last few years,
Graham would be in GP2. However, his glorious victory in the IRL 500
with Buddy Rice should give BoozeonBoard's Husband well more than the
necessary credibility he needs to get Graham where he wants him. No?

Actually, I believe the weather is the reason Graham isn't going to GP2.
IIRC his flight to Europe for his GP2 test was grounded because of
inclement weather, thus he lost out on any chance of landing a
competitive seat. He could have arranged other tests, but his chances of
getting with a top team were slim after that. Taking a seat with a
mid-pack team would have been a big mistake, as Timo Glock would tell you.

His dad should have done what Piquet's dad did - create a team just for
his son (and cheat).

Re: Graham Rahal

Damn - It certainly doesn't appear that Graham is going to the series
that
Tony George promised would be outdoing F1 and NASCAR by now. And
Chip Ganassi didn't bring back his bright star Montoya to that storied
IRL
series either. Damn, the series that races at Indy isn't much of
magnet
to those who are involved.

How can the IRL be generating so much inner momentum - do tell?
Sounds like Rahal's performance was indeed, impressive.

Re: Graham Rahal

Wouldn't surprise me at all if Graham didn't turn out to be better than
Bobby. Doesn't always happen that way, but can. Richard turned out to be
better than Lee Petty. Buddy was just as good if not better than Buck
Baker.

In open wheel the examples are a bit more difficult because the father son
combos I remember the father was a legend to begin with. Michael, like him
or not was a top flight driver in his day, but he was no Mario. Then again
who was?? Al Jr was a good if not great driver, but was he as good as Al
Sr? Hard to say, but on road courses Id say he was better. At Indy maybe
not. Im not going to even comment on the Foyts.

His name will and has given him some great advantages, but it will
ultimately be up to Graham to produce. What I suspect will happen is that
Graham may find that he will make more money with less travel and more of a
life than any F1 ride that might come his way and will stay put. Get a ride
in one of the 2 teams in F1 that has a chance to win and you are set. But
anywhere else and you are just a moving chicane that is there just to give
the leaders something to have to move over and complain about.

When I read this, I thought, "damn, wasn't Bobby Rahal still racing when
Paul Tracy started? And now Tracy's gonna be racing his kid?" And that
made me realise that it's been a hell of a long time since Tracy started
in Champcars. And that I remembered him spinning out in Long Beach in his
first race. And suddenly realised that I've gotten a lot older since
that happened!
