CHAMP CAR: Jani Confirmed at PKV with Red Bull Backing http :// www .speedtv, com /articles/auto/champcar/34924/
One of the worst-kept secrets of the current Champ Car silly season was
uncovered this weekend, when PKV Racing confirmed the arrival of driver
Neel Jani and sponsor Red Bull for the 2007 campaign.
Swiss Jani, 23, made headlines in 2005 with wins in GP2 and A1GP. A
member of Red Bull’s driver development program, he was tabbed as a
Formula 1 test driver for Scuderia Toro Rosso in ’06, when he also made
four GP2 starts (replacing the injured Nicolas Lapierre at Arden) and an
equal number of A1GP events.
The PKV deal will mark Red Bull’s first foray as a title sponsor in
Champ Car. The energy drinks company, which will also support two
Forsythe entries (for Robert Wickens and John Edwards) in Atlantics this
year, had sponsored Eddie Cheever’s IndyCar Series team until ’04.
“Following the 2006 season the next step in my racing career was to
compete in either Champ Car or Formula 1,” Jani said. “Thanks to Red
Bull I was given the opportunity to run in Champ Car with PKV Racing.
PKV is a very professional and competitive outfit. It is a young team,
but has strong management, outstanding mechanics and a solid background.
I am looking forward to a competitive debut in Champ Car and having the
most successful season in the team’s history.”
“We are very excited to have a driver of Neel’s caliber join PKV
Racing,” added team co-owner Jimmy Vasser. “Neel has been competitive at
every level during his racing career and I am looking forward to helping
him through the learning curve during his inaugural Champ Car season.
“We are also extremely fortunate to have the support of a company like
Red Bull. We feel that the combination of Neel Jani and Red Bull gives
PKV Racing the opportunity to fulfill our goal of challenging for race
wins and championships now and in the future.”
Jani has already one test with PKV under his belt, with the old Lola
last month at Houston. He will join this week’s Champ Car testing at
Sebring, the first open test for the new Panoz DP01 chassis.
