Forsythe Championship Racing has formed a new partnership with energy
drinks giant Red Bull for the 2007 edition of the Cooper Tires Presents
the Champ Car Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda.
15-year-old American sensation John Edwards, who has been racing in
Europe for Red Bull’s driver development program, and 17-year-old Robert
Wickens, winner of the Formula BMW USA championship this past season and
another product of the Red Bull Junior Team program, have joined the
Forsythe squad with primary sponsorship from Red Bull. Edwards, Wickens
and the Forsythe Atlantic squad have set their sights squarely on the $2
million dollar prize to be awarded to the 2007 Atlantic Champion.
“Red Bull has shown an incredible commitment to driver development here
in North America, paving the way for young open-wheel stars to get the
opportunities they deserve,” said Jerry Forsythe, owner of Forsythe
Championship Racing. “We are honored to be selected as beneficiary of
this development program as two of the brightest stars on the horizon
have come on board with us for 2007. John and Robert are proven winners,
but beyond that they are two incredible young men who have committed
themselves to reaching the pinnacle of open wheel racing. We look
forward to the 2007 Atlantic season with great anticipation.”
John Brunner, team manager for Forsythe’s Atlantic squad, expressed
confidence in his new prospects after seeing them in action.
“We had a chance to test Robert and John in Moroso (Florida) last month
and again last week at Thunderhill (Raceway, in Northern California) and
they were both quite impressive,” he said. “Their talent is
unmistakable, and when these young men are out of the car, it’s pretty
amazing how mature and focused they are. They’re young, but both have a
lot of racing experience and when they put their helmets on it’s like
they become grizzled old veterans instead of teenagers! We’re looking
forward to the first series open test in January when we can really see
how we stack up against what looks like another incredibly strong
Atlantic field for 2007.”
For Canadian Wickens, moving up to Atlantics is an emotional step. “Ever
since I can remember I have always looked up to Canadian Forsythe
drivers like Greg Moore, Alex Tagliani, Lee Bentham, Jacques Villeneuve
and of course Paul Tracy,” he declared. “So to be able to say that I am
a part of Forsythe Championship Racing is a real honor to me and a dream
come true. I plan on making the most of it. It looks like the Atlantic
Championship is once again shaping up to be highly competitive. That
being said, I always expect a lot out of myself, and 2007 will be no
different. I think if we can achieve consistent top five finishes
through out the season, we will have a very good chance of winning the
title.”
Edwards, a native of Little Rock, Arkansas, added, “It’s great to be
joining Forsythe for next season. I can tell already that they have one
of the best packages, and I can’t wait to see how we compare to the
others at the first race in Las Vegas. I’ve enjoyed working with
everyone on the team, and it’s great to be working with people that
understand every detail of the car.”
