New CC Team PCM completes significant third test

New Champ Car World Series team Pacific Coast Motorsports completed
their third, and arguably most successful, test to date at the
California Speedway road course in Fontana.

The two-day test was the last using the ex-Rocketsports Racing Lola's
and drivers Alex Figge and Scotland's Ryan Dalziel completed their
first race simulation runs without a hitch.

The team has now logged more than 3000 miles ahead of the delivery of
their new Panoz chassis' and while the team are somewhat coy over their
pace, there is no denying that Tyler Tadevic and his crew are going
about things in the right way.

"We used the race weekend simulation to give ourselves smaller
parameters to work within, for example to getting used to a new track
before qualifying," said team manager, Michael Harvey. "We did some
long runs on Thursday and also a simulated a qualifying session.

"Friday, the focus was more race-day orientated, we did a warm-up and
then Alex and Ryan completed the 80-lap race distance, which included
pitstops. We accomplished what we set out for, which included tyre
strategies, fuel conservation and driver orientation and we are very
happy with the outcome." Harvey continued.

"This concludes our testing programme with Rocketsports and we would
like to thank Phil Howard and all of the Rocketsports guys for
accommodating us. This was a huge help for our engineers and drivers,
we accumulated about 1500 miles per driver and we feel ready to move
for with the new Panoz with the rest of the Champ Car teams."

I think that team is going to be reasonably competitive right off the
bat. I hope they're here to stay. It was a shame that they were driven
out of ALMS by their (and everyone else's) inability to compete with the
works Corvettes. They really like the more level competition in
Grand-Am, and that has caused them to stay there. Methinks they'll like
the parity in CCWS and stay as well.

That's the down side of a totally non spec series. I have no desire to watch
Nascar sportscar racing. Champ Car is a nice balance between everyone
having the same equipment against hard work being rewarded.

Why? Are you condemning GA because it's owned by the Frances? There was
more rule-fiddling this year in ALMS to make the 'Vettes and Astons
closer than there's ever been in GA...

The Daytona Prototypes are odd-looking cars from some angles, I'll
give them that, but they give hard, close, fair racing. There's
maybe a dozen potential winners at each race, with no need for 'stage
management'. There's little to choose between Crawford and Riley
chassis (and once Lola have developed the Chase I'm sure that'll be
formidable!); Lexus, Pontiac and Porsche engines; even the BMW has
shown well on occasion. Sure, it's not 'equality', but there's enough
rough parity to ensure that no race is entirely predictable.

Unlike a lot of people interested in sports car racing I've spent my own
hard-earned cash to go and see both series and recognise that there's a
place for both of them. ALMS is evolving into somewhere for
manufacturers to show off; GA is for teams and drivers to make a
real difference. The tech might be higher an ALMS but the level of
commitment in GA is just as high and the on-track results are that
bit more unpredictable.

Sure, there are some areas I'd like to see straightened out in GA
- I don't think it's quite fair that tubeframe specials like the
Pontiacs should be competing against virtually stock Porsches in
GT, but as long as a good Porsche can compete on even terms with a good
Pontiac, it's hard to get too worked up... yet ;)

Re: New CC Team PCM completes significant third test

The short interview with the drivers on Speed report Sunday was pretty cool
as you could tell they were very excited to be moving back to open wheel
from the dumbed-down prototypes. Those two have paid their dues and deserve
to be in CC.

Now, what the heck is Gelles doing? Lots of PR for his BMW and Atlantic team
but I have not heard a peep about his CC team since he announced it at San
Jose.
