Why? Are you condemning GA because it's owned by the Frances? There was
more rule-fiddling this year in ALMS to make the 'Vettes and Astons
closer than there's ever been in GA...
The Daytona Prototypes are odd-looking cars from some angles, I'll
give them that, but they give hard, close, fair racing. There's
maybe a dozen potential winners at each race, with no need for 'stage
management'. There's little to choose between Crawford and Riley
chassis (and once Lola have developed the Chase I'm sure that'll be
formidable!); Lexus, Pontiac and Porsche engines; even the BMW has
shown well on occasion. Sure, it's not 'equality', but there's enough
rough parity to ensure that no race is entirely predictable.
Unlike a lot of people interested in sports car racing I've spent my own
hard-earned cash to go and see both series and recognise that there's a
place for both of them. ALMS is evolving into somewhere for
manufacturers to show off; GA is for teams and drivers to make a
real difference. The tech might be higher an ALMS but the level of
commitment in GA is just as high and the on-track results are that
bit more unpredictable.
Sure, there are some areas I'd like to see straightened out in GA
- I don't think it's quite fair that tubeframe specials like the
Pontiacs should be competing against virtually stock Porsches in
GT, but as long as a good Porsche can compete on even terms with a good
Pontiac, it's hard to get too worked up... yet ;)
