Bobby Rahall on Graham's Future

Bobby Rahall on Graham's Future

Last night I tuned on the Sebring race, around 9:40pm ET. They were
interviewing Bobby Rahall. Right when I turned it on they were asking what
were Graham's plans for the year. The interviewer said "...we are all very
interested where he (Graham) might end up for the rest of the year..."

Bobby replied - "Well, Kevin Kalkhoven said he will be in ChampCar, so I uh,
take a man at his word."

Rahall said this with a big smile on his face. I'm not sure what to make of
his smile. It was almost like he was saying it's all up to Kalkhoven and the
Rahall's don't know what the heck is going on.

Also notice, he said "I, uh, take a man at his word." He didn't say he takes
Kalkhoven at his word.

Sounds like Graham Rahall getting a ride is in limbo. Amazing. He and Marco,
the future of open wheel racing in the U.S. and in F1. Marco has a ride. Too
bad Rahall is wasting his time with soon to be defunct series.

What future of open wheel racing in the U.S could that be? It's dead
already.

Open wheel racing is universally recognized as all out purpose built racing.
The cars do not have bumpers and fenders so they cannot tap each other like
it was a Wal-Mart parking lot on Saturday. People recognize quality and
always gravitate to a Kentucky Derby or an Indy 500. It is disingenuous to
say that open wheel racing is dead. If it is dead why are OWRS and IRL
running so many races?

The reason that open wheel racing lost its popularity in the USA was because
the owners brought in dozens of foreign drivers who could not get on the
advertising and marketing bandwagon. Let me know the next time you see Emmo
or Arie on the Tonight Show.

It is easy to say that Americans are racist or ignorant or xenophobic but
that does not change what has happened. Open wheel racing seemed to have
been quite prosperous in the days of Foyt and Andretti and Unser and Sneva
and Rahal and so on and so forth. Be sure to let me know when Sebastien
Bourdais is big heat in this country.

Desparately trying to hold on. Champ Car is starting to gain a little,
but the IRL has jumped off the cliff. They are demonstrating the
desperate nature of their situation by following the model of Champ Car.
Its their only hope of survival, but it won't work for them as well as
it as worked for Champ Car.

Wrong. But no surprise you take this POV.

Its over.

I respect your disrespect of my point of view. My point of view is ugly and
narrow-minded and racist and xenophobic and all of that. But there is
something that you need to appreciate. The truth is not always pretty.

If a race fan looks at open wheel racing in America they will find that it
was big heat when it was mainly American drivers and got to be marginal when
it came down to Sebastien Bourdais. That is not pretty. That is not nice.
That is not fair. It is also not my fault.

It is quite possible that Sebastien Bourdais is a better driver than Jeff
Gordon or Tony Stewart. He is just not popular in this country. More the
pity.

You're right. What has happened to open wheel in the last 12 years is
ugly. Totally unforgivable.

It IS your attitude that is the problem. And you think that's reality,
but its just you.

Fortunately, you are not representative of the vast majority of race
fans. Just representative of a small number of equally small-minded
low-brow pseudo-fans.

I can sure spell racing - IRL. And I can spell what Graham will be
doing when ChampCar drives around the poor parts of Vegas - nada.

He might also just be playing with it. Considering any of those ways,
it would still be a 1.

Coming from you Booby that means...... very little.

It's not like Rahole would know anything about keeping his word.

I thought he said "...take _the_ man at his word".

If Booby Rahole told me the sky was blue and the grass is green I'd seek
independent confirmation.

Seems as though Graham has good head on his shoulders.... and aims to keep
it there by eschewing Formula Backbrace. He'll end up in ALMS (full time)
before he'll go hIRL'ing.

I've never noticed this till now, or maybe I just have not paid
attention - ChampCar fans sure don't like to have their racing series
criticized. They sure can dish it out but they sure can't take the truth.

I don't think I have ever called a ChampCar fan a bad name. In fact,
it's the opposite. I have numerous times said when ChampCar dies in a few
weeks the ChampCar fans are more than welcome to follow the series that they
should have been following all along - the IRL.

I guess ChampCar fans are in one of those stages that people go thru when
dying - denial, anger, hope, sadness, acceptance. I think it's safe to say
for the last few years ChampCar fans have been stuck in the Pissed Off
Denial stage.

Or perhaps, you all simply don't want to accept the truth and therefore
attack the messenger?

Anyway, I only reported what I saw. It sure doesn't look good for
Graham Rahallllll. I know if he wanted to drive in the IRL he would have a
seat.
