Well several things hit me right off the bat with these times, and
they aren't pretty. It really is what I expected though. The speed
difference from front to back is WAY too big to be safe. Front to
back of the field is nearly a 10 mph speed difference. With the top at
105 and change and the back at 96 almost 97, that is huge. Sarah is in
way over her head. She is even 3 full mph behind the next fastest,
Mr. Ed. Ed at 100.021 to Buddy at 101 and change you are still
looking at 2 second s lap slower. With the leader running a 61 sec
lap, thats getting lapped every 30 laps. Danica at 12 cuts that to
about a second an a half so that brings it up to about 45 laps before
going a lap down. At about 6ths with Dan it has dropped to about a
second a lap which means he gets lapped at about 61. That leaves at
best 4 cars on the lead lap. Figure one or two of them might have a
problem in the pits, have the yellow come out at the wrong time, cut
down a tire, or any of a host of reasons a car goes a lap down and at
best you have a stinker of a race. A worst you have a bad accident
with the closer rate of fast to slow cars.
The good news is that it won't be yellow free. Outside of maybe Scott
Sharp, the back of the field will be off track more than the safety
team. If they manage to go slow enough to stay on track, the debris
caution Nascar style would likely come out just as Danica was about to
get lapped.
I thought the IRL was going to start like 22 cars this year. What
happened to the others? Did some that showed at Homestead not make
the trip to St Pete? Is the championship so unimportant a team would
skip a race if it isn't an oval?
Ending with the theme music and raising my glass to a chorus of "I am
Indy". TGFTG
