David Coulthard says he is a little frustrated that his season thus far
has been spoiled by contact with other cars.
The Red Bull man was hit by Felipe Massa in Australia, and by both
Adrian Sutil and Jenson Button in Bahrain. While teammate Mark Webber
has twice finished in the points, DC has only ninth in Malaysia to his name.
“I’m starting to feel a bit self conscious that a lot of incidents have
involved me!,” Coulthard joked to SPEEDtv,com . “The positives are that
in terms of engine power we’re right there with Renault and we’re
beating them occasionally with Mark’s results. The downsides are that I
haven’t scored any points.”
In Bahrain the Scot was hit by Sutil on a busy first lap, and dropped to
the back after pitting for tires and a new nose.
“I never got qualifying right. It’s not my strongest point anyway, but
it was a particularly bad example… I was trying to keep out of trouble
at Turn One, but I think when everyone concertinaed up I found myself
right in the middle. I think it was Sutil who hit my left rear, and it
pushed me into someone else. So I broke my endplate and he cut my tire.
Then I had a bit of wheelbanging.
“I’ve not been down that far for quite a while, and I’m amazed at how
much they all go for it, considering they’re not going to score a point.
I don’t know which one of the ‘Stupid Aguris’ I was wheelbanging with,
but I had the inside run into Turn 6, which is a high speed chicane, and
he just wouldn’t give up. So I went in, bang, and pushed him, and off he
went. You know, you just have to give up at some point.”
Later in the race he was struck by Button when the Honda driver – also
delayed – made a bit of a mess of a passing attempt.
“The one with Jenson, what you didn’t see on TV was that he had already
passed me two laps before. He came down my inside, went wide, and I
passed him again on the run into Turn 10. Now I knew he was there and
quicker out of the chicane, I held the inside line. I think what
basically happened is it looks like I had a moment, and then he had to
go for it. I was already committed to the corner.
“I’m disappointed to keep getting involved with people, but I’m
delighted that the car didn’t fall to bits. I fully expected someone to
pull the ripcord, and all the suspension to fall off. But actually it
handled better after that. I think what it did was knock the winglet off
that had collapsed [on the first lap], and was creating a lot of drag or
turbulence. That sorted the balance out...”
Coulthard says that its essential that the latest aero and mechanical
tweaks pay dividends at Barcelona next weekend: “We just need lap time.
Unless we unleash something we’re just meandering in that mid-grid area.”
...
Personally, I think he should give proper voice to his frustration by
kickin' three colours of shit out of them...
