The Atlas F1 site once carried a long thread of argument about the
dynamics of that unique American formula, the "Supermodified". The
first of these three photos shows an odd "anti-Ackermann" angle for
the car's outside wheel. * w w w .oldstox . com /images/supermod%206.jpg

The second and third photos show the outrageous left-side loading of
their big-block V-8's, whereby the driveshaft and diff are barely
inside the chassis at all. The left rear wheel is driven by the
shortest possible "stub" from the differential.

Beam axles, of course! As soon as one of these managed a 160mph lap
at Phoenix, they all promptly reverted to half-mile ovals.

supers are the balls. they make a great roar and they fly around small
ovals.
they are designed well for what they do. lap flat ovals quickly.
they are a favorite class here in new england.

Aha, "supers are the balls" sounds like what the English would say:
"supers are the dog's bollocks" !! Some things are universal?

except americans don't say "dogs bollocks"

supers run on mile ovals. they are very exciting at NHIS and on the dirt
syracuse mile track.
they are not road racers and make no pretense towards it.

offset race cars are common enough on ovals.
NA$CAR mods are offset too.
they put on a hellova show. well worth the money.
you can say what you want about NA$CAR but they make sure you enjoy your
time at the races and unlike FIA they don't place billboards to block every
decent sightline.

--- Thank God for Syracuse --- the ultimate test of nerves. Remember
the time Billy Pauch in a sprint car (direct drive, single gear)
lapped the Syracuse dirt oval at a lap AVERAGE of 145 mph ------ dear
lord, and when that happened even macho men like Sammy Swindell and
Kinser started to hedge and say "I'm not sure that we really need to
be racing here -----"

I can't find a decent clip of the "Moody Mile", but this one shows how
much power a sprint car can put down on the straight --- .

there are some nice super and big block mods on youtube.
my cousin billy o'brien was a super driver in the 60s, he held some track
records around the northeast and canada.
i used to like ollie silva back then, and of course bently warren.
the mini-tri-oval at star speedway in epping NH is a great track for them to
run on.
i doubt the euros here have a clue what great sat nite short track racing is
all about. their loss.

Too right. I see the Sprints in Washington State, at Skagit's 1/3
mile clay track. Kinser lapped it in 11.77 seconds once. But some of
the best pure racing is the 360 Sprints.

I'm sure I've seen them advertised in the UK, I used to get a regular
weekly motorsports mag and they appeared regularly, just not
particularly popular over here.

Yes, they have tried to get Sprint car formulas going in the UK, but
the oval community (fans and drivers) have been committed to contact
and semi-contact racing for 50 years, and it's been a hard sell.

Also, UK oval track surfaces are fairly narrow, compared to North
American ovals, and combined with the unforgiving steel sheet fences,
it is a hazardous environment for lightweight and fragile Sprint
machines.
--- and a Sprint driver would not want to see this kind of armour
coming up behind:

Ah yes, I forgot about the contact element. For the yanks who don't
know what that means, in order to liven up oval track racing, you are
allowed, and indeed expected, to shove your rival off the track, hence
the armoured cars.

That reminds me I've not been to a banger racing event in ages!

Never realised the Poms would go for something more hardcore than anyone
else! :p

Americans are always racing at our local speedway here in Australia.

Kerry Madsen, from the World of Outlaws series, was supposed to race last
month but the event was rained out. :(

we have classes for that type of racing, but modifieds, both regular
and supers are trying to race.
the late models and street stockscare for banging as much as for
racing.
then there are these things called enduros. there are no cautions or
slow laps. wreaked cars are removed by armored tow/push trucks.
there are figure 8 races too.
