OT again: Too-Big Turbochargers

This first photo link from 25 years ago is of a nitro burner in Gene
Snow's funnycar. The motor is a custom-built Arias pushrod V-8, but
although its valve covers are from their usual automotive 8.3 litre,
this block was actually a powerboat engine of 10 litres. (Arias is
still building race engines.) The "outlaw" mentality of drag racers
is illustrated by Snow's decision that although this motor worked
well, because of the exhaust turbos, IT DID NOT SOUND TOUGH ENOUGH for
a fuel car, so he abandoned it. * w w w .oldstox . com /images/Arias.jpg

Second: I have never seen turbos this big on any engine. Together
they are bigger than the big-block Ford V-8 they feed. The car is
nominally a Mustang doorslammer, and its owner is proud that it is
technically street egal, with everything required by law for it to be
licensed for the road. It has run 202mph in the 1/4 mile, with
wheelspin up to the 1/8 mile, and a very distinctive "whistle".
