Lewis Hamilton says he was pleasantly surprised with McLaren’s
competitiveness in the Spanish Grand Prix, after being able to keep his
Ferrari rivals on their toes for much of the race.

The Maranello squad rattled off another 1-2 finish at Barcelona, but
Hamilton chased Felipe Massa throughout the race’s second half and took
the chequered flag just 1.5 seconds behind the Brazilian.

Although two safety car interludes meant Ferrari’s advantage was
probably greater than it appeared on paper, Hamilton was relieved not to
be further behind the Scuderia in both qualifying and the race.

“For sure you could say it was a surprise because they were extremely
quick, but it was all very, very close in qualifying,” he said.

“We had a feeling they were a little bit lighter than us, maybe by one
or two laps.

“We all seemed to be very close.

“They just seem to have a slight edge at the moment but it was impressive.”

After struggling with locking brakes and other handling maladies in
Bahrain, Hamilton was much happier with his MP4-23 at the Catalunya circuit.

“I was really happy with the balance of the car and the tyres came and
went, and came and went,” he said.

“I was able to maintain quite a good balance and pace and keep up with
[the Ferraris].

“It was quite close in the middle stint.

“When you get to within a couple of seconds of someone, you’re damaging
your tyres more and it’s harder to stay behind them but I was happy with
where we came.”

Race winner Raikkonen, however, poured cold water on Hamilton’s
confidence – claiming that he hadn’t needed to extend himself all
afternoon and had plenty of speed in hand.

“We didn’t need to push,” he said.

“If we wanted to push, we could go much faster, for sure, but there’s no
point in risking anything or using the engine more than you needed to.

“The first thing was that they were trying to catch us and the second
thing was that they would try to overtake, but if they don’t even catch
us, it’s fine.

“In the last part of the race, you don’t see the true speed of most of
the people – they slow down if they can.”

Team-mate Massa was a little more wary of the McLaren threat,
emphasising that Ferrari can’t afford to relax its development efforts.

“Let’s keep working and improving because we saw that our competitors
were very close,” he said.

“If you look in qualifying they were very close and in the race as well,
so we need to pay attention race by race and we need to keep working
like crazy in the factory to improve the car in every area.”

Hamilton acknowledged that, even as McLaren tries to close its
performance deficit to Ferrari, it has BMW Sauber hot on its heels.

“It is amazing how close all the cars are,” he said.

“Robert Kubica was extremely close to me and I kept looking in the
mirrors at a certain point and he was always in the exact same spot.

“It is very impressive that all the teams are so close.”

Hopefully Lewis will realise who his opposition is this year, cos I don't
reckon it's Ferrari. Still the soultion is the same: go quick!

Of course the real solution is "go quicker" or "go quickly". Quick is
an adjective and requires a noun.

I bet he's cut to the quick by your quickness. Come quick everybody and
see.

Hambone sucks. Without Ferrari plans and Alonso's setups, Hambone is
incapable of elevating McLaren.

If it wasn't for the two safety cars which kept on closing the gaps of
the spread out grid, and that Ferrari DID NOT need to push their cars
because they were already P1 and P2, then yeah, Hamilton would be right -
but he's wrong. How many fastest laps did Lewis get compared to the
Ferrari's?

Wrong about what exactly?

?Let?s keep working and improving because we saw that our
competitors were very close,? he said.

?If you look in qualifying they were very close and in the race as
well, so we need to pay attention race by race and we need to keep
working like crazy in the factory to improve the car in every area.?

Who said that again? Someone on their toes?
