The new Ferrari nose

How effective is it?

What circuits will it be most effective at?

It's been known about for a while so one would expect other teams to
have evaluated/re-evaluated the design. Who might be next to bring one
to a race and which race?

Is it more applicable to some cars than others?

Thoughts.

The nose works with the way Ferrari have designed the front wing. It
is not an "add on" but a careful evolution that started with the new
front wing centre section last season. It was one of the big concerns
they had inthe McRacing incident last year, that the wing, nose did
not make it onto the McRacing car. It is a pretty neat solution to a
bunch of front end problems and it works with every other bit on the
bodywork. It would take a lot of changes on the other cars to make it
work the same way. Because it is part of the bodywork it should be Ok
for next year too. Ferrari thinks at ahead to the next year all the
time. This years car is as much of a race car as it is a test bed for
next years car, Next year's car is the basis for the next year. There
are never any big changes, just constant development and improvement.

Wow, and there was me believing each team started from scratch each
season.

Sorry, I didn't mean to be condescending in my comments, if I was, my
apologies.

Very interesting.

However, if Mclaren had these designs last year then they could possibly
have a solution on the drawing board that is ready to implement a short time
after Ferrari first unveiled it in public. That said, with all of last years
attention it would be bloody hard to actually make that work.

I reckon Mclaren might be the last to introduce it if it applies to their
overall concept. Like Renault and the J Damper they would probably want to
be seen to be the last to adopt it, thus dispelling any notion of them
benefiting from what ever Ferrari data they had.

It's highly doubtful that given that it was public knowledge, that
Ferrari themselves have said it's been in the public domain that they
would do this for a while, that they could then accuse McLaren of
developing a similar nose from something that was secret. In any case it
might not work with McLaren's front package - Ferrari say that it helps
the flow under the car, and McLaren might not have the same problem
around the underside of their nose or to a different extent that means
it isn't an issue for them. The McLaren nose is much lower than
Ferrari's and the flowfield there will be significantly different.

The concept would seem to derive the greatest benefit at high-downforce
circuits, so I'd bet that it wouldn't be very useful at Montreal or Monza.

Also, it looks like BMW is interested in giving the concept a go:

Or Monaco.

I would imagine that the concept would quickly show up to be good, bad
or indifferent on each circuit in wind-tunnel tests.

Interesting, I guess we will see at those circuits.

That's amazing, that they could engineer, test and incorporate such a
major body modification so quickly. I'd have thought it would require a
chassis recertification, but I guess it works around the main part of
the chassis.

How quickly are you assuming?

Crash testing would of course be required before it could be used.

Why so?

Like any nose, it is a replaceable bolt-on to the tub (which is crash
tested).

Because the tech regs stipulate it. "Push off".

Fine, not that it tells anyone very much, go splinter one, and then
"shove it".
