F1 at stalemate over new computer game deal

Formula one fans may have to wait for the next official computer game,
as Sony and Bernie Ecclestone are reportedly locked in stalemate over a
new publishing deal.

Sony Computer Entertainment's previous exclusive publishing deal,
covering the 2003-2007 period, was for a rumoured $200 million,
according to the technology news source TG Daily.

The website said the "gap between what Sony is willing to pay for a
(new) license and what Bernie Ecclestone's (company) is demanding is too
wide".

Industry sources are reporting that rival computer publishers EA,
Ubisoft and Codemasters may now be in the running for the new five-year
contract.

Tottenham, Mercyside Red for ManU etc..

I'm looking forward to the mini game that'll be added on, according to
rumours it'll be some sort of war time prison cell where you get to whip and
generally abuse the prisoners - featuring Mox (I love FIArrari) Mousely.

Heh, just checked the game again, as it's been a while, and you're
spot on.. Liverpool is Mercyside Red. ManU is called Man Red, there is
a Man Blue as well, presumably City. Tyneside, Keagan is in the team
and that rings a bell as him being at Newcastle around that
time('04-'05).
Still, i recall hearing about the game, that from all the big name EPL
teams they've only got clearance to use the name for Chelsea and
Arsenal. The rest were all named differently for obvious reasons.. Sad
really. It's frigging computer game.

Apparently later releases of the game got more proper names, but the
'05 version was so blatant in it's script, i couldn't be stuffed to
even leach the new ones, let alone buy them..
'sok though, i have Battlefield instead. Uses different balls,
slightly different goals and the injuries are more realistic.. :-)

Meh, the last PS2 game was utterly crap in any event, so I'm not overly
concerned by this news. I don't understand how they did it, but it
actually required a physically painful level of pressure on the
controller to achieve full acceleration with the analogue buttons (and
everyon other game was fine, including GT4).

It would be nice to see Bernie, his wife and daughters all getting
guillotined.

Nah - Bernie has no worse practices than any other business men (yes Gates,
I'm talking 'bout you), and whilst we may not like his approach, he has
turned F1 from a circus into a polished performance - if it wasn't for him,
we probably wouldn't be talking about F1 now...

And besides, his daughters are cute (but alas, a tad young), so guillotining
would be a tragic waste, and his wife, well, I would (but then I'm not as
young as I used to be..)

Bernie is merely making as much money as possible from selling the
product he has. In terms of his negotiation style, you can't really say
that he does anything wrong - he sets a rate and somebody pays it,
whether for a GP or for a computer game or whatever. If the market
supports the rate then he gets it - isn't that the fundamental basis of
capitalism? It's no different than the money markets buying into oil at
$120 a barrel - and that's really something to get upset about.

I think more to the point is that he created the professional product we see
today. If it wasn't for him, F1 wouldn't be worth what it is. And lets not
forget the thousands of people who make a small fortune off the back of F1.

Must confess, overall, I've never had a problem with Bernie.

"Professional" is in the eye of the beholder.

At least you didn't call it a "sport".

What's unprofessional about F1? If anything its too professional.

If you see F1 as a team sport and not a drivers sport, then I see no problem
calling it a sport. For drivers, its not. Never has been though.

I am not saying it is good or bad, its what I see.
