Lewis dismisses critics' claims

Lewis Hamilton has defended the start to his second Formula 1 season –
insisting the criticism that has come his way has been out of proportion.

The McLaren driver heads into this weekend’s Turkish Grand Prix nine
points adrift of title leader Kimi Raikkonen following Ferrari’s
comfortable victories in each of the last three races.

Nevertheless the Briton, who at this stage last year led the standings
by two points after an unprecedented start to his rookie season, has
still had his form criticised from some quarters – particularly after
mistakes in Bahrain earlier this month.

Hamilton, however, says that errors at some point of the season are
inevitable and it doesn't mean he has suddenly lost any of his talent.

“A few people have questioned my commitment, my ability to drive,” he
was quoted as saying by The Sun newspaper.

“I’m not Superman but I believe I have the ability to win a world
championship.

“Everybody makes mistakes.”

“I had one race where I made a mistake and all of a sudden people start
making assumptions,” he added.

The 23-year-old felt accepted the blame for his nightmare Bahrain
weekend, where he slumped to a 13th place finish after selecting the
wrong engine map on the grid and then damaging his car after hitting the
back of Fernando Alonso’s Renault.

He bounced back with a strong drive to third place last time out in
Spain and says he will continue giving his all as McLaren attempts to
get back on terms with Ferrari.

“What people say about my performances does not really bother me – what
does concern me is doing the job to the best of my abilities,” he said.

“I didn’t do that in Bahrain and that annoyed me.

“Once we get everything right our car is as quick as any.”

exact opposite of last year then.

"Defend"? What is this? Against what prosecution or attack by what
body does a race driver need to "defend" anything?
And why would a driver have to "defend" something in public, in the
media? I bought a tee-shirt this morning. I wanted an XL but could
only get an L. I am even now preparing my "defence" of my actions.

Jesus, let's just watch the buggers race each other and outside the
track shut up.

Some times I think the hardest thing about being any sportsman is dealing
with inane journalists asking stupid questions and criticising what they
don't understand.

This is why the Finns are so smart. By nature, they are not very
talkative people.

Mika would drive journos crazy with one word responses to questions
"yes" "no".

Kimi mumbles in a montone with a few words and he is done and out the
door.

Kimi is probably a friendlier guy than Mika but the same questions
everyday by 100 journalists 24x7 would drive anyone crazy.

SNIPPED

I get the feeling that Lewis Hamilton is going to become the great lost hope
of Formula One. The
guy is totally cracking up under the pressure.

In which case, Alonso must be suicidal.

Anything like that time you had a feeling you were going to fart only
to find you were *grossly* mistaken?

LOL! Good ones.

Maybe bring Hakkinen back to set up the car for them?

True, because he got all that extra speed out of the MacLaren last year, oh
hang on, where did he finish again...

He'd have to ask Alonso to bring them back from Renault.

They've lost the input from Fernando into the Lewis race simulator. Maybe
they should get EA to update the software, LOL?

Well, considering he only hit *one* car this year, the fact that it was
the "right" one makes one question on how serious a mistake it was.
Alonso finished lower than Ham that race. That didn't happen the next.
