Formula One needs to return to its roots - garagiste teams, rules that
govern only weight, dimensions and safety, classic F1 tracks, and a cheap
engine supplier. Bernie Ecclestone's grand vision of an elite
manufacturer's based series, based on rules that is turning F1 into a spec
series, run on numbingly dull tracks in the third world is imploding.

And just one more thing, bring back shaggy haired drivers who booze the
night before a race and have wild threesomes with pot-fueled groupies in
the motorhome just before the start of a race.

The history of F1 is different manufacturers competing.

None of that is new nor unique to this season.

More of it, though, meaning a snappier swirl towards the bottom of the bowl.

Not nearly more of it, neither.

Anyone remember the season McLaren "won" all but one race? That was
the true nadir.

1988, remember it well. Total dominance. Shame about Ferrari.

In 1988, that was a short-lived phenomenon.

Now, we have the overhang of Tilkedrome skidpadrings, which will taint
the racing year after year. The "gift" that keeps on giving.

Er, no. The fiddle brake was 1997. The year Mark's talking about was
1988.

You think you do, perhaps. But it's OK, we're all getting old. :-)

It is hard to keep track of what they were cheating, and when.

It's all a big conspiracy. That's the only reason why I watch F1, now that
Flavio and Naomi Campbell have split up (and Kimi's on the wagon).

...Nope.

Uh-ugh.

That was the brake system approved by the FIA?
The (visible) system that passed official FIA race scrutineering?
The one that got banned after Ferrari "had in a word" in Mosley's shell
like?

German Grand Prix (1980).
Ferrari personnel spent the entire night in the Williams garage
wielding their tape measures and taking photographs of the car.

Larini (Ferrari 1994):
"I had a problem with the traction control"

Todt to Fontana (Jerez 1997)
"?By strict order of Ferrari, Villeneuve must be held up if you come
across him on the track"

Mika Salo (Ferrari 1999):
"When I was driving for Ferrari we always spied on McLaren"

Michael Schumacher, (Ferrari 2001):
"We came that close to the optimum in terms of engine management
that there wasn't much difference to real traction control"

Ferrari (Australian GP 2007)
Win the first race of the season with an illegal flexi-floor.

Nigel Stepney (2007)
"Do you think (chief designer) Nicolas Tombazis came to Ferrari
from Mclaren without something in his mind? The new Ferrari front
end aero came from McLaren.
