Once again I must apologise for failing to post these some time ago.

1. The reason for the reduction in distance covered is because the FIA
no longer count the Friday practice sessions as part of the event for
engines. Teams now use different engines on Friday and swap to the
'race' engines for Saturday/Sunday.

Final Top Speeds - #17 - Interlagos

These comparisons only use the top speeds recorded through the regular speed
trap during the Saturday Qualifying sessions. This means that, at most events,
there are comparisons that are fairly meaningless because of some problem that
affected one or more drivers during one particular session.

The first table compares the 2006 team/driver combination with the equivalent
2007 team/driver - the same driver if possible, otherwise the 2006 driver is
compared to his 2007 replacement. This analysis is intended as a team comparison,
but the first table is also of some interest - but should be read with caution.

The second table (above) ranks the 11 teams in order of the largest increase in
top speed, with Spyker making the biggest advance at Interlagos, and Toyota the
smallest. (At some events some teams have failed to better their top speed from
last year.

Here are the rankings at each 2007 event to date together with the average
ranking for the season to date.

Notes: The Belgian GP did not take place in 2006 so there is no comparison
possible. Similarly the Japanese GP moved from Suzuka to Fuji rendering any
comparison meaningless.

Toro Rosso, Williams, Red Bull & Spyker have all changed engine supplier since
2006.

The + or - indicates a gain or loss in average since the last GP. A 'gain' is a
decrease in average and a 'loss' is an increase - obviously :-)

There have been some events where two teams were equal (to two decimals of
percentage difference) and have been ranked equally (BMW and Renault at
Silverstone is one example).

Driver Rankings - after Interlagos

Numbers in brackets [] in second column indicate table positions before
adding the most recent GP (IE the change in table position).

(-1) (+1), etc. - number of races deleted or added to driver's record
since the last event
PP - number of Pole Positions (in the last 100)
W - number of wins (in the last 100)
FL - number of Fastest Laps (in the last 100)
Points - these are my points, allocated for many & various things, not
just wins, poles, f.laps, etc.
[Change] - the change in points as a result of the most recent race
** - current drivers

Thanks to John Oxton for pointing it out.

The 2006 columns contained the data after the FIRST race of 2006 instead of the
last race. Most of the positions (Pos.) were wrong as were all of the ASPs.

So nobody noticed?

Final Overtaking Statistics - #17 - Interlagos

Introduction for New Readers
============================

2007 is the tenth season that I have posted these amateur overtaking
analyses. My intention was to allow easier comparisons between Grands
Prix, seasons, circuits, drivers, etc.

In order to make any meaningful and/or useful observations it is essential
to produce the stats in as consistent a way as possible. To do this I have
devised several "rules" that I try to follow for each event. Please note
before posting to complain that I missed an obvious passing manoeuvre that
it has probably been excluded because of one of my "rules". The rules are
outlined in the "Disclaimer" below - please read it.

This analysis was mainly derived from the official FIA lap chart, which is
usually available from www .fia, com , http :// forix.autosport, com or
www .autosport, com /f1/ on race day or the following day. The original charts
remain copyright of the FIA.

Other excellent Formula One websites are available. This analysis is
completely and totally unofficial.

Disclaimer
==========

For the purposes of this analysis, I only count what I will term "genuine"
passing manoeuvres, which means that I always exclude:

a) any place changes made during pit stops
b) all lapping or unlapping manoeuvres
c) any place changes made during the first lap

Hopefully, a) & b) are obvious. c) is because although lap one is often the
best opportunity to make up places, it is also not typical of the rest of
the race, and so, for the purpose of comparing races with other races and
seasons with other seasons, it is simpler to exclude lap one completely. I
do summarise the changes on lap one later in the post.

For the purposes of this analysis a "pit stop" encompasses the slowing down
lap and the out lap, since any passes during those laps MIGHT be due to the
driver slowing down or speeding up.

Passes are not counted in these stats UNLESS the gained position is held
until the start/finish line is next crossed and so gets recorded onto the
lap chart. I try to ignore anything that isn't recorded in the lap chart,
even if it was seen on TV.

These are the passes I read for the 2007 Brazilian GP:

Lap Place Passer (Passed)
==================================================
2 7 Hamilton (Trulli)
7 6 Hamilton (Heidfeld)
8 4 Kubica (Webber)
11 17 Hamilton (Barrichello)
12 16 Hamilton (Sutil)
13 11 Button (Sato)
13 12 Nakajima (Sato)
14 12 Sato (Nakajima)
15 11 Nakajima (Sato)
15 14 Hamilton (Schumacher)
15 13 Hamilton (Davidson)
15 12 Hamilton (Sato)
17 11 Hamilton (Nakajima)
29 12 Hamilton (Barrichello)
33 3 Kubica (Alonso)
33 9 Hamilton (Vettel)
61 5 Kubica (Rosberg)
61 4 Kubica (Heidfeld) [team-mates]
61 5 Rosberg (Heidfeld)

That's 19 passes in total, compared to 51 last year.

Most: 10 by Hamilton

Note: Ten is the most by any driver in one race this season. The previous best was
nine by Felipe Massa at Silverstone.

The Last 10 Seasons

For reasons of space I have removed the data for 1997 from this table. In
1997 there were 318 passes in 16 races, a race average of 20.

Note: The number in brackets (ASP) is the average starting position in 2007
(grid position after any penalties have been applied). Obviously, a driver
who frequently starts from pole position has very little chance to gain
places while one who usually starts at the back of the grid has a good
chance of gaining places.

I also missed Vitantonio Liuzzi's 10 at Fuji, so Hamilton equalled the previous best.

Since 1998 there have been 13 instances of 10 or more in a race:

16 Barrichello AUS 1999
16 Irvine FRA 1999
13 Häkkinen AUT 1999
13 Kubica CHN 2006
11 Zonta ITA 2000

10 M Schumacher MAL 2001
10 M Schumacher MAL 2002
10 Villeneuve AUT 2002
10 Liuzzi JPN 2007
10 Hamilton BRA 2007

Apologies.

You have all three headings pointing to the same graph.

Oops. Thanks, Joe. The correct links are:

http :// ciropabon.googlepages,com /OTPerYear1983-2007.jpg

Overtakings minus times overtaken, per driver.
http :// ciropabon.googlepages,com /OTDifferenceInOvertakingsPerDriver20.jpg

On a side note, the first of these two graphs is a surprise for me,
because it shows a marked diminishing in overtakings in the last 25
years.

Even if there is a relatively good correlation between Brian's
"scientific" method and Mirco's undescribed method for the years where
the two series overlap, I don't trust too much the figures of the P.B.
era (Pre Brian's statistics, I mean :) )

The interesting thing is that it's a slow decline, rather than a steep
drop from year to year. This suggests that the cause is a series of
small changes, rather than one large one.

If anyone is interested in more comprehensive overtaking data there was
an article included in autosport, com 's weekly journal on December 19.

If you have access to autosport's website (subscription required), it's
at:

http :// www .autosport,com /journal/article.php/id/1404

and is titled "Passing Thoughts: F1 Overtaking Analysis". Written by
Michele Merlino - an occasional poster to this forum. Mic has used my
'rules' but excludes some passes where lap time analysis 'proves' that
a driver had a problem which caused him to lose places. The data goes
back to 1983.

The numbers are presented as a graph, but I'll transcribe them:

1983 607
1984 666
1985 657
1986 581
1987 558
1988 493
1989 547
1990 494
1991 495
1992 406
1993 392
1994 289
1995 297
1996 186
1997 265
1998 207
1999 260
2000 279
2001 230
2002 235
2003 303

Looks to me like there was a gradual drop from 1983 to 1991, then a sudden
drop for 1992-93 (Williams domination), followed by an even bigger drop in
1994 (oh look, the year refuelling was reintroduced and the "plank" too -
what a coincidence!). Mindbogglingly low in 1996 (Williams domination again)
and since then it's been about steady except for another very low year in
'05. But to me the refuelling looks by far the biggest factor - echoing what
many have said since day one.
