Okay, not F1, but as long as we're in silly season

These pictures are borderline NSFW. Some people might find some of
ths shots objectionable. Plenty of cheek in some.

Your URL doesn't work, but the gallery isn't hard to find on speedtv, com .

Speaking of silly season: where will Alonso land, and who will get the
open seat at McLaren?

(On the latter question it will be hard to top Patrick Head's suggestion
for silliness: Michael Schumacher.)

RBR or Renault. RBR would be an interesting test of his character - can
he take on the kind of leadership role needed to push the team to the
top. Renault is the soft option, back to Flav and the team that he built
around him. So he'll probably go to Renault - he doesn't strike me as
someone who'd enjoy the risk. ;)

Will he take his half-a-second-a-lap with him?

Toyota seems to be the hot favourite at the moment, but I still wouldn't
be at all surprised to see him end up at Ferrari, if not next season
then 2009. There's something mighty fishy going on there.

I wonder if Ron even knows who'll replace him yet.

One thing I'm fairly sure of (famous last words...) is that Hamilton's
slip-ups in the last couple of races will have reminded the team that,
astonishingly mature and level-headed though he is, he's still only
entering his second season and it might not be wise to pair him with
someone almost as inexperienced, let alone more so.

That narrows the field down a bit, probably even excluding Kovalainen,
whose name gets mentioned a lot. And the way Sir Frank and Patrick Head
are talking, if I were Ron I'd be scared even to suggest they might
consider releasing Rosberg from his contract anyway. Patrick might hit
me. They know when they're on to a good thing.

My guess - if Alonso does go to Toyota - is Trulli. Hardly a star, and
in normal circumstances, he'd probably have missed his chance for a top
drive. But he knows what he's doing, and McLaren know that Lewis will
win races for them. In a way, it quietly solves the problem they had
this year of both drivers challenging for the championship, without
having to alter their equal treatment policy.

It all depends on whether Fernando is heading to Cologne.

Heh! I'd like to see it, though. More specifically, I'd like to see the
look on de Montezemelo's face...

(I may have said this before - I write a lot of stuff that I don't end
up posting - but it's funny how events change the way you look at
things; in 20-odd years of following F1 I was never much of a McLaren
fan until about halfway through this season.)

I don't know where he'll actually go - bu where else, where a seat
might be available, would he WANT to go other than Renault?

Who I think would be a good idea to partner Hamilton, if only because I
want to see him succeed.

Oh I was - remember one Ayrton Senna da Silva? IMHO (and I was a great
Jimmy Clark fan) the greatest I'd ever seen. In Brazil Hamilton did a
few overtakes that reminded me greatly of Senna, who just got on with
it. No waiting for the easy option.

Renault have said that they would not be interested unless
it was a long term deal.

I wonder if Justin Wilson or Dario Franchitti could be persuaded back
across the Atlantic.

Why bother? Long term deals aren't worth the paper they're written on
for Alonso these days. ;o)

Wilson might, but much as I'd love to see him in F1, Dario's probably a
bit long in the tooth these days. And isn't he one of those
single-seater/NASCAR converts now?

However good Justin Wilson is (and he's fairly good), he's a foot
too tall to be an ideal F1 driver. Even when he tried F1 height was
an issue, these aero-dominated days any chief designer would probably
laugh him out of court!

Oh, I liked Senna. I just didn't care for his team much. Too much
bolt-polishing and garage painting for my liking. I was always more of a
Williams man, myself. Who cares what colour the car is as long as it's
quick?

Of course, they're all like McLaren now. Even Williams Grand Prix
Engineering is now WilliamsF1 with a trendy missing space. Et tu, Frank?

Do you know about or remember Cooper? The old garage they operated out
of in Surbiton is still there, should be listed in my view. By repute
the space frames weren't jigged, just chalk lines on the floor..... I
was at the Woking launch of the first (carbon) MP4 back in the day, what
a difference. Not better, just so different.

Of course I know about Cooper. :) Don't remember them, though.

I take your point, but there's a difference between technological
progress, which I'm all for, and polishing the tyres and making sure all
the spanners point the same way, which I'm not particularly. Although
it's all fair enough, I suppose, if it brings in the sponsors.

But "WilliamsF1". I mean, *really*...

I always find it interesting listening to/reading the Senna apologists.

How can anyone admire a driver who cheats, barges his opponents off the
track, and generally behaves like a first class arsehole?

Senna was a ruthless self-aggrandising win-at-any-costs, self-centred
rule-bending merchant.

The sad thing was he didn't need to be that way, his innate talent
would have brought him to the top anyway.
