Renault's punishment

Renault's punishment

"Stress and nervous tension are now serious social problems in all
parts of the Galaxy, and it is in order that this situation
should not in any way be exacerbated that the following facts
will now be revealed in advance:"

- Renault will not lose 2007 points;

- If a point penalty for 2008 is imposed it will be suspended.
So as long as they don't have another problem in 2008, nothing
happens.

- The maximum fine will be $5 million (a lot of money, of course,
but only 1/20 of McLaren's fine).

Of course, while for Ron Dennis and McLaren, F1 is their main activity
and McLaren simply can't move to another series (which series can pay
a team budget of $200 Million ?), for Carlos Ghosn and Renault, F1 is
not that important and can be dropped if it doesn't make financial sense
(part of the reason Alonso left last year was because he was not confident
that the team would continue long-term).

So if Renault was treated like McLaren, Ghosn would not hesitate to
close the team. This coupled with the fact that Ghosn and Max Mosley
are not mortal enemies ensures that their treatment will be different.

After the decision, McLaren might take the subject to civil courts.

I'm surprised that the FIA didn't fine McLaren for wasting their time
for not being Ferrari.

Now that sounds more like the FIA's goal. But isn't a 100 million dollar
find extreme even for F1 standards? I mean, who in the hell can pay that
amount and still consider just operating. Let alone operate at a competitive
level...

I was just thinking. $100M ? It could have been worse, it could have
been real money. Ron could stall a couple of weeks and the fine would
get even cheaper.
