Winter Testing Summary - Jan 19 2008
I have tried to post a summary of the various test sessions in recent years
and plan to do so again. It's basically a summary of best times, best laps
and driver and team totals.
'It's only testing.'
I've mainly used the data provided by FORIX since it tends to be more
accurate, complete and reliable. I have also used info from Autosport
magazine, F1 Racing magazine, and various websites including autosport,
pitpass, planetF1, etc.
Especially useful are the comprehensive 'official' team press releases
which can be found most easily from the motorsports,com website here:

I've included a few explanatory notes below, but I'll add a couple of
extra ones before the main text.
Observers at Catalunya in December noted that Michael Schumacher was
instantly able to adjust to the loss of TC, while Felipe Massa seemed
to struggle throughout the test.
Some teams - e.g. Toro Rosso - had two cars, but only one had the 2008
standard ECU (MES). The other car had the old 2007 ECU but the driver
aids were disabled. To be fair for both drivers they swapped cars at
various times, although sometimes they stuck to one car for a complete
day.
One other change that doesn't get mentioned much is the change to
gearboxes that must be used for four races. Most, if not all, of the
recent tests have utilised the new 'beefier' gearboxes.

Note: Bridgestone provided each car present at the December 04-07 test with
three sets of 'slick' tyres to evaluate them for possible use from 2009.
Some teams reported which times were set using the slicks whilst others did
not. The slicks were estimated to improve lap times by up to 2.5s per lap
when used with 2007 levels of downforce (2008 & 2009 levels will differ).

years GP. My hunch that Ferrari would step ahead this year is looking

Bridgestone reported the hottest temps experienced during winter
testing. Teams were using medium & hard compounds.
Yesterday was a lot cooler than that. Again, according to Ferrari it
was air 12/18, track 14/28.

circuit". Is it possible your data is flawed?
On the circuit conditions I can reassure you and others that they were
not optimal, the sand, wind and track temps were far from the best
conditions for this circuit (which you and many may have guessed, as
you know media releases are unreliable).

Well my data is only what I can gather from websites and certain F1
magazines. All of them state that Massa did 1'29.989 on March 1st
2007.

It's been very difficult for the testing this week in Bahrain. The
temperatures are high teens and early twenties, but there are very
strong gusting winds here at the moment, and they are also throwing
huge amounts of sand around. Both teams have been whinging to the
local press about the weather, and how they came because it was meant
to be warm... Not that the locals could really do anything about it!
