Overtaking Statistics #1 - Melbourne

I hadn't forgotten about these - I needed to spend a bit of time
setting them up and didn't have enough time before today.

Introduction for New Readers
============================

2008 is the 11th season that I have posted these amateur overtaking
analyses. My intention was to allow easier comparisons between Grands
Prix, seasons, circuits, drivers, etc.

In order to make any meaningful and/or useful observations it is essential
to produce the stats in as consistent a way as possible. To do this I have
devised several "rules" that I try to follow for each event. Please note
before posting to complain that I missed an obvious passing manoeuvre that
it has probably been excluded because of one of my "rules". The rules are
outlined in the "Disclaimer" below - please read it.

This analysis was mainly derived from the official FIA lap chart, which is
usually available from www .fia, com , http :// forix.autosport, com or
www .autosport, com /f1/ on race day or the following day. The original charts
remain copyright of the FIA.

Other excellent Formula One websites are available. This analysis is
completely and totally unofficial.

Disclaimer
==========

For the purposes of this analysis, I only count what I will term "genuine"
passing manoeuvres, which means that I always exclude:

a) any place changes made during pit stops
b) all lapping or unlapping manoeuvres
c) any place changes made during the first lap

Hopefully, a) & b) are obvious. c) is because although lap one is often the
best opportunity to make up places, it is also not typical of the rest of
the race, and so, for the purpose of comparing races with other races and
seasons with other seasons, it is simpler to exclude lap one completely. I
do summarise the changes on lap one later in the post.

For the purposes of this analysis a "pit stop" encompasses the slowing down
lap and the out lap, since any passes during those laps MIGHT be due to the
driver slowing down or speeding up.

Passes are not counted in these stats UNLESS the gained position is held
until the start/finish line is next crossed and so gets recorded onto the
lap chart. I try to ignore anything that isn't recorded in the lap chart,
even if it was seen on TV.

To refresh memories, here is a brief summary of overtaking in 2007:

Bahrain 39
Malaysia 16 Leading Drivers (Top 20)
Australia 23 ========================
San Marino 4
Europe 13 26 M Schumacher
Spain 7 22 R Schumacher
Monaco 19 21 R Kubica & G Fisichella
Britain 6 20 F Massa
Canada 9 19 J Button
USA 5 18 S Speed
France 5 16 T Monteiro
Germany 21 14 N Rosberg & R Barrichello
Hungary 32 13 C Albers
Turkey 25 12 J Trulli, V Liuzzi & D Coulthard
Italy 12 11 N Heidfeld
China 51 10 C Klien & K Räikkönen
Japan 13 9 M Webber
Brazil 18 8 P de la Rosa
---------------- 7 JP Montoya & R Doornbos
Total 318
No. GP 18
Race Avg. 18

These are the passes I read for the 2008 Australian GP:

Lap Place Passer (Passed)
==========================================
2 9 Coulthard (Alonso) [1]
3 14 Sutil (Bourdais)
9 14 Nakajima (Piquet)
11 15 Massa (Piquet)
14 11 Glock (Sato)
17 14 Massa (Nakajima)
19 6 Räikkönen (Barrichello)
20 11 Massa (Sato)
49 7 Alonso (Kovalainen)
49 6 Alonso (Räikkönen)
49 6 Kovalainen (Räikkönen)

1. The lap chart shows DC in 10th on lap one and 9th on lap two. These
laps were behind the Safety Car so I'm assuming that DC passed Alonso
before they caught up to the SC.

That's 11 passes in total, the same number as last season.

Most: Massa 3

Overtaking Statistics #2 - Sepang

Introduction for New Readers
============================

Disclaimer
==========

I cut 'n pasted an old file and negelected to update the 2006 data for
this summary. Just in case anyone wants to check what happened in 2007
I'll include it here.

Note: The number in brackets (ASP) is the average starting position in 2008
(grid position after any penalties have been applied).

Obviously, a driver who often starts from pole position has very little chance
to gain places while one who usually starts at the back of the grid has a good
chance of gaining places.
