Experience counts

Have you noticed the similarities between Williams and McLaren on the
driver front? Williams let go the considerable experience of Alex Wurz
and McLaren that of Fernando Alonso. Despite obviously very quick cars
they are both experiencing problems, McLaren less so ... probably
because of Pedro de la Rosa. Also note that the Scarlet has utilised
the experience of their previous champion and how well Honda are doing
with Barachello AND Wurz.

Experience DOES count.

Williams didn't 'let Alex go' as such. He announced that he was retiring
as a race driver. They didn't have a vacancy for another test driver, so
he was free to join Honda. He's back tracked a bit now and says that if
he was needed as a race driver in an emergency he would be prepared to
drive.

I suspect that if Ferrari called Michael at 5 am on a Friday and asked
him to drive that weekend, he'd be at the track by 8. Drivers are all
that way.

Does Michael still have a superlicence?

As they expire at the end of the year for which they were issued, he
would have had to re-apply each year... I believe he could have renewed
it without issue each year so far (one of the requirements is to have
made at least 15-starts in the last 3 years).

I suspect even after that, as a past champion, and active (special) test
driver, he'd be easily able to renew his license...

He was on the track at the winter session, so I think so. I'd have to
read the sporting rules, but I thought the license was good for more
than a year.
