National Anthems

[Spoiler Space]

Well after an - interesting - Canadian GP (Hamilton's kindergarten
teacher obviously skipped the lesson on 'Traffic lights'), we had a
not only a new GP winner but a new national flag to run up - and, I
expected, as the Sauber mechanics gathered waving their Swiss flags,
two new national anthems to be played. "How long since THAT'S
happened?" I thought to myself.

So I confess I was surprised and disappointed when the Polish anthem
was followed by the same old "Germans have no sense of humour" we all
came to know so well during the Schumacher era. Presumably Sauber,
despite still being based in Hinwil, has become officially a German
team upon being bought out by BMW?

I think Lewis's problem is to do with coloured light and it's behaviour
in filters. You can't see the red light through the red mist. ;o)

Bloody silly thing to do, but it certainly made for an interesting
result. As Dillon says, Kubica has always looked like a future champ, so
no big surprise that when he was given an opportunity he was able to
make the very best of it. If his career prospects needed a boost (which
I rather doubt), he just gave himself a goody.

For those who saw the ITV coverage... I wonder if Heidfeld knew when he
agreed to do the pre-race bit that he was going to be painted (sorry!)
as the poor old has-been being shown up by the new boy? He might think
twice before agreeing next time!

Nice to see DC back on the podium... quite like old times.

And I'm sorry to say this, but... Sutil runs like a girl. ;o))

We have heard the Swiss anthem before - for a driver not a constructor.
"Clay" won 5 GPs.

One other point in rallying, even in the WRC, the Scots run with the
satire on their cars instead of the union flag. Yet D.C., Eddie and
Hamilton all get the union flag and God Save ....

If F1 allowed "regional" flags would BMW prefer the Azure and Argent
lozengy flag of Bavaria to the Or, Gules and Sable tricolour of unified
Germany.

How could I have possibly forgotten Regga? [Kicks himself
resoundingly]

In my defence, I was thinking in terms of it being a first win my a
Swiss manufacturer. I'm now wondering if the mechanics' waving Swiss
flags were staging their own form of protest against their Bavarian
overlords? :-)

You are also forgetting Jo Siffert who won twice (GBR 68, AUT 71).

Poland became the 20th nation to win a race. The others were, =
chronologically:

Italy 15 drivers, 43 wins
Argentina 3 38
UK 19 196
France 12 79
Australia 2 26
Sweden 3 12
N Zealand 2 12
USA 5 22 [excludes Indy 500 winners]
Germany 5 103
Mexico 1 2
Belgium 2 11
Switzerland 2 7
Austria 3 41
Brazil 6 95
S Africa 1 10
Canada 2 17
Finland 3 42
Colombia 1 7
Spain 1 20
Poland 1 1

How many can you recall? And who was the first/last for each country?

Not always. Colin MacRae used both at different times in his career.

And for what it's worth, I'm fairly sure I've seen DC's name next to a
Union Jack on one of his cars. Possibly back in his Williams days.

The FIA's geography is shocking. Hinwil's in Germany now, following
Silverstone's decampment to Ireland a few years back, and the annexation
of Enstone by France. Somebody should buy them an atlas.

> Presumably Sauber, despite still being based in Hinwil, has become officially a German team upon being bought out by BMW?

Doubtless. I don't really like this idea that a team's nationality is
what its owner says it is. I suppose you could argue that, being
British, it's because we don't get to hear the National Anthem as much
as we used to, but think of the blokes at the factories, having their
success heralded by someone else's tune.

It could also be argued that Renault and BMW are difficult cases because
of the dual nationalities involved, but engine manufacturers have never
had official recognition; the championship is for constructors, and in
BMW's case the constructors are Swiss; in Renault's, British.

Still, it could be worse. I've heard there's widespread indignation in
Germany that McLaren *doesn't* get the German anthem.
