Delayed Monaco Stats

I was away on holiday for a couple of weeks, and although I was back in
time for Canada I've had little time to catch up with the statistics.

I'm also still struggling with Windows Live Mail (spit), and have reverted
to OE to post these.

I'll work through them in the usual order, posting them as replies to this
thread. When I finish Monaco I'll start a new thread for Canada.

I might not catch up before Magny-Cours :-)

Top Speed Comparison - Monte Carlo

I posted these comparisons throughout the 2006 & 2007 seasons to illustrate
changes in top speeds as measured through the speed traps. In previous years
I restricted the comparison to speeds recorded during the three segments of
qualifying, since the best laps are usually recorded in those sessions. For
2008 I propose to consider the top speeds recorded in the other sessions
(free practice and the race).

The first table compares the 2007 team/driver combination with the equivalent
2008 team/driver - the same driver if possible, otherwise the 2007 driver is
compared to his 2008 replacement. This comparison is intended as a team
comparison, but the first (driver) table is also of some interest - but
should be read with care.

Notes

All teams have retained their names except for Spyker-Ferrari which has become
Force India-Ferrari.

'S#' Session in which the top speed was recorded (P1/P2/P3/Q/R)
'Diff' difference in top speed (km/hr)
'%Dif' difference in top speed (as percentage of 2007 speed)

Since the Turkish GP the FIA website has changed and I can no longer locate
speed trap data from the race - I didn't have the speed trap data for the
2007 race either, but until now the 2008 data was available.

I have obtained the race speed trap data - it's still on the FIA website, but
it's hidden. Four drivers - Vettel, Glock, Räikkönen & Nakajima went faster
during the race. Their top speeds improved more than originally posted as
did those of their teams (Toro Rosso, Ferrari, Toyota & Williams). Here are
revised tables:

Gearbox Usage
=============

Jo Bauer's Technical Report (click on 'Scrutineering Reports' on this page):

" http :// www .fia,com /en-GB/mediacentre/pressinformation/f1pressinfo/monaco/Pages/monaco.aspx"

says that Räikkönen, Massa, Coulthard, Bourdais and Fisichella started the
event with new gearboxes. All had completed four events with their previous
'boxes.

Sebastian Vettel had not completed four events with the same 'box, but was
forced to use a new one for Monaco because the new STR3 car does not accept
the previous gearbox. He was penalised by a 5-place grid demotion.

After Saturday practice it was necessary to change Giancarlo Fisichella's
gearbox resulting in another 5-place demotion.

After qualifying it was necessary to change David Coulthard's gearbox leading
to the third 5-place penalty. Suddenly after five races with only a single
gearbox change there were three in one event - presumably all Ferrari 'boxes?

Agent is your friend. Unfortunately, you can not longer get Eudora,
so I'd recommend TBird. I'd also recommend Linux, but I suspect that,
like me, you have some disgusting requirements for the Beast's
software.

I'm only licensed through 7.0.1.0. I think 7.1 would require that I
use it in "sponsored mode", which now means no ads, but some limits in
functionality.

But I don't care. I have what I want.

I use Thunderbird for both mail and news. Unfortunately, under the
guise of eliminating a small number of child porn groups many US ISPs
are cutting way back on newsgroup availability. My own provider, Time
Warner, is eliminating them entirely.

Fortunately I can still run an X server on my Windows laptop and tunnel
through SSH from the Caltech alumni server. Shortly I'll be using
xvnews to post from there (rather than just appearing to do so).

Oh, yeah, relevance: Either Bernie is clueless about how to handle
having mortally offended Max, or he's playing a game that's too subtle
for *me* to figure out.

Yeah, I'm a TW (RR). They haven't told me anything. But (if you look
at the headers) you'll notice that I'm using a 10 euro a year
provider. Although when I first signed up with them that was $9.82
and is now almost $20. But still worth it. And if I wanted binaries
(read: porn), I could get that.

Used to use xrn, multiple eons ago. Talk about a resource hog!! But
I had a sierra hotel HP-UX box with 512 MB and a 10 GB SCSI disk. Two,
actually.

Ditto. Of course, I thought Max was mortally wounded three weeks ago,
so I have even less of an idea as to what's going on. Maybe they will
have simultaneous strokes and Tony George will step in to save open
wheel racing.

Okay, stop choking, get up off the floor, clean the puke off your
keyboards and monitors. That was supposed to be a joke.

How does the fastest lap of the whole weekend (3 practice sessions, 3 qualifying
segments and the race) compare to the fastest lap of the weekend in 2007?

Here are two tables - one compares driver with driver; easy enough if the same
driver remains in the same team. If not, compare the 2007 driver with the guy
who replaced him.

'S' is the session when the best lap was achieved (P1/P2/P3/Q1/Q2/Q3/R)
'Lps' are the total laps in all sessions (2007 excludes any third drivers)
'Diff' is the gain/loss in seconds
'%Diff' is the difference in time as a percentage of the 2007 time

A negative Diff/%Diff mean that the driver/team improved. Positive means they
got worse.

There can be several reasons for the variations seen.

Apologies if the tables wrap - save it and reformat if you are interested.

Note: Spyker-Ferrari was renamed to Force India-Ferrari, all other team names
remain the same.

=====
Timo Glock heads the table this week, gaining 1.3s on Ralf Schumacher's best lap from
2007. Four drivers failed to improve on the equivalent 2007 best lap - Kovalainen,
Heidfeld, and the Toro Rosso duo. The latter pair may have 'suffered' because of the
introduction of the new car.

The second table takes the best lap time from both drivers in each team and compares
with the equivalent team last season. Probably a better comparison.

Overtaking Statistics #6 - Monte Carlo

Introduction for New Readers
============================

2008 is the 11th season that I have posted these amateur overtaking
analyses. My intention was to allow easier comparisons between Grands
Prix, seasons, circuits, drivers, etc.

In order to make any meaningful and/or useful observations it is essential
to produce the stats in as consistent a way as possible. To do this I have
devised several "rules" that I try to follow for each event. Please note
before posting to complain that I missed an obvious passing manoeuvre that
it has probably been excluded because of one of my "rules". The rules are
outlined in the "Disclaimer" below - please read it.

This analysis was mainly derived from the official FIA lap chart, which is
usually available from www .fia, com , http :// forix.autosport, com or
www .autosport, com /f1/ on race day or the following day. The original charts
remain copyright of the FIA.

Other excellent Formula One websites are available. This analysis is
completely and totally unofficial.

Disclaimer
==========

For the purposes of this analysis, I only count what I will term "genuine"
passing manoeuvres, which means that I always exclude:

a) any place changes made during pit stops
b) all lapping or unlapping manoeuvres
c) any place changes made during the first lap

Hopefully, a) & b) are obvious. c) is because although lap one is often the
best opportunity to make up places, it is also not typical of the rest of
the race, and so, for the purpose of comparing races with other races and
seasons with other seasons, it is simpler to exclude lap one completely. I
do summarise the changes on lap one later in the post.

For the purposes of this analysis a "pit stop" encompasses the slowing down
lap and the out lap, since any passes during those laps MIGHT be due to the
driver slowing down or speeding up.

Passes are not counted in these stats UNLESS the gained position is held
until the start/finish line is next crossed and so gets recorded onto the
lap chart. I try to ignore anything that isn't recorded in the lap chart,
even if it was seen on TV.

These are the passes I read for the 2008 Monaco Grand Prix:

Lap Place Passer (Passed)
==========================================
2 10 Webber (Nakjima)
2 15 Sutil (Piquet)
3 13 Sutil (Bourdais)
4 14 Vettel (Piquet)

First Safety Car period (laps 9-10)

11 10 Piquet (Sutil)
11 14 Kovalainen (Fisichella)
12 6 Alonso (Webber)
12 15 Rosberg (Fisichella)
12 16 Glock (Fisichella)
13 17 Vettel (Fisichella)
15 9 Trulli (Barrichello)
17 7 Trulli (Nakajima)
17 8 Barrichello (Nakajima)
21 10 Vettel (Piquet)
23 11 Kovalainen (Piquet)
23 10 Kovalainen (Vettel)
24 11 Piquet (Vettel)
36 10 Vettel (Piquet)
42 11 Rosberg (Button)
53 11 Kovalainen (Button)
54 14 Glock (Trulli) [team-mates]

That's 21 passes in total, compared to 2 last season.

Most: Kovalainen & Vettel 4

The Last 10 Seasons
===================

To save space I have removed the columns for 1997-98 from this table. I
have included the data from those seasons in the Total & Avg. columns.
The number of passes for each GP in 1997-98 is summarised below the table.

Obviously, a driver who often starts from pole position has very little chance
to gain places while one who usually starts at the back of the grid has a good
chance of gaining places.

Driver Rankings after Monte Carlo

Numbers in brackets () in second column indicate table positions before
adding the most recent GP (IE the change in table position).

GPs - number of GPs counted for each driver (from the last 100)

[-1] [+1], etc. - number of GPs deleted/added to driver's record since
the last event
PP - number of Pole Positions (in the last 100)
W - number of Wins (in the last 100)
FL - number of Fastest Laps (in the last 100)
Points - these are 'my' points, allocated for many & various things, not
just wins, poles, f.laps, etc.
[Change] - the change in points after adding the most recent GP data
** - current drivers

The only change in the top half of the table is Kovalainen passing Rosberg
to take 17th place. Robert Kubica reaches 1000 points after just 27 races.
In the lower reaches the 'rookies' mostly move up a place or two.

All-time Top 60
===============

The addition of the 2008 Monaco results changes the averages for the six
current drivers in the all-time top 60. Lewis Hamilton's win adds a
significant amount to his average - even though he is still only counting
75% of his full race average. Before Monaco he was ranked 22 with an
average of 60.36. Adding his Monaco haul pushes his average to 91.30
and elevates him to 10th. Alonso and Räikkönen remain static, but drop
one place as Hamilton moves up. Felipe Massa's pole position and second
place are enough to move him up two place at the expense of Tony Brooks
and James Hunt. David Coulthard's average falls slightly, but not enough
to lose places. Rubens Barrichello's average also falls a fraction, but
in his case, enough to drop below Jacques Villeneuve.

Current drivers are indicated by a '*'. Their averages are volatile and
will fluctuate from race to race.

Drivers with a limited number of starts are indicated by '%1', '%2' or
'%3' showing those with 25%, 50% and 75% of their respective averages.
