Top Speed Comparison - Montreal

I posted these comparisons throughout the 2006 & 2007 seasons to illustrate
changes in top speeds as measured through the speed traps. In previous years
I restricted the comparison to speeds recorded during the three segments of
qualifying, since the best laps are usually recorded in those sessions. For
2008 I propose to consider the top speeds recorded in the other sessions
(free practice and the race).

The first table compares the 2007 team/driver combination with the equivalent
2008 team/driver - the same driver if possible, otherwise the 2007 driver is
compared to his 2008 replacement. This comparison is intended as a team
comparison, but the first (driver) table is also of some interest - but
should be read with care.

Notes

All teams have retained their names except for Spyker-Ferrari which has become
Force India-Ferrari.

'S#' Session in which the top speed was recorded (P1/P2/P3/Q1/Q2/Q3/R)
'Diff' difference in top speed (km/hr)
'%Dif' difference in top speed (as percentage of 2007 speed)

Since the Turkish GP the FIA website (www .fia, com ) has changed and I can no
longer locate speed trap data for the race - I didn't have the speed trap
data for the 2007 race either, but until Turkey the 2008 data was available.

Top Speed Comparison - Updated

Adding the race data makes a lot of difference. No less than 12 of the 20
drivers were able to set their best top speed during the race. Perhaps
the weather conditions were better or perhaps the track repairs worked
better than expected.

How does the fastest lap of the whole weekend (3 practice sessions, 3 qualifying
segments and the race) compare to the fastest lap of the weekend in 2007?

Here are two tables - one compares driver with driver; easy enough if the same
driver remains in the same team. If not, compare the 2007 driver with the guy
who replaced him.

'S' is the session when the best lap was achieved (P1/P2/P3/Q1/Q2/Q3/R)
'Lps' are the total laps in all sessions (2007 excludes any third drivers)
'Diff' is the gain/loss in seconds
'%Diff' is the difference in time as a percentage of the 2007 time

A negative Diff/%Diff mean that the driver/team improved. Positive means they
got worse.

There can be several reasons for the variations seen.

Apologies if the tables wrap - save it and reformat if you are interested.

Note: Spyker-Ferrari was renamed to Force India-Ferrari, all other team names
remain the same.

Notes

Eight driver combinations showed an improvement while twelve were slower.

The second table takes the best lap time from both drivers in each team and compares
with the equivalent team last season. Probably a better comparison.

Jo Bauer's Technical Report (click on 'Scrutineering Reports' on this page):

" http :// www .fia,com /en-GB/mediacentre/pressinformation/f1pressinfo/canada/Pages/canada.aspx"

says that Glock, Rosberg, Coulthard, Bourdais, Sutil and Fisichella started
the event with new gearboxes. Only Glock had completed four events with his
previous 'box, the other five failed to finish in Monaco and were entitled
to change without penalty.

After the Saturday practice Toro Rosso changed Sebastian Bourdais' gearbox,
and after qualifying Honda changed Jenson Button's and Toro Rosso installed
a new 'box in Sebastien Vettel's car, which was a 'new' car.

Overtaking Statistics #7 - Montreal

Introduction for New Readers
============================

2008 is the 11th season that I have posted these amateur overtaking
analyses. My intention was to allow easier comparisons between Grands
Prix, seasons, circuits, drivers, etc.

In order to make any meaningful and/or useful observations it is essential
to produce the stats in as consistent a way as possible. To do this I have
devised several "rules" that I try to follow for each event. Please note
before posting to complain that I missed an obvious passing manoeuvre that
it has probably been excluded because of one of my "rules". The rules are
outlined in the "Disclaimer" below - please read it.

This analysis was mainly derived from the official FIA lap chart, which is
usually available from www .fia, com , http :// forix.autosport, com or
www .autosport, com /f1/ on race day or the following day. The original charts
remain copyright of the FIA.

Other excellent Formula One websites are available. This analysis is
completely unofficial.

Disclaimer
==========

For the purposes of this analysis, I only count what I will term "genuine"
passing manoeuvres, which means that I always exclude:

a) any place changes made during pit stops
b) all lapping or unlapping manoeuvres
c) any place changes made during the first lap

Hopefully, a) & b) are obvious. c) is because although lap one is often the
best opportunity to make up places, it is also not typical of the rest of
the race, and so, for the purpose of comparing races with other races and
seasons with other seasons, it is simpler to exclude lap one completely. I
do summarise the changes on lap one later in the post.

For the purposes of this analysis a "pit stop" encompasses the slowing down
lap and the out lap, since any passes during those laps MIGHT be due to the
driver slowing down or speeding up.

Passes are not counted in these stats UNLESS the gained position is held
until the start/finish line is next crossed and so gets recorded onto the
lap chart. I try to ignore anything that isn't recorded in the lap chart,
even if it was seen on TV.

These are the passes I read for the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix:

Lap Place Passer (Passed)
==========================================
5 8 Heidfeld (Barrichello)
5 18 Vettel (Bourdais) [team-mates]
9 14 Piquet (Glock)
12 13 Piquet (Trulli)

Safety Car period (laps 18-21)

25 15 Rosberg (Bourdais)
29 15 Massa (Bourdais)
31 7 Kubica (Heidfeld) [team-mates]
34 13 Massa (Webber)
39 10 Massa (Nakajima)
39 8 Massa (Button)
51 5 Massa (Kovalainen)
51 4 Massa (Barrichello)
51 5 Kovalainen (Barrichello)
55 11 Webber (Button)
60 9 Kovalainen (Rosberg)
61 6 Massa (Barrichello)
68 5 Massa (Trulli)

That's 17 passes in total, compared to 21 last season.

Most: Massa 8

To save space I have removed the columns for 1997-98 from this table. I
have included the data from those seasons in the Total & Avg. columns.

(grid position after any penalties have been applied).

Obviously, a driver who often starts from pole position has very little chance
to gain places while one who usually starts at the back of the grid has a good
chance of gaining places.

Driver Rankings - after Montreal

Numbers in brackets () in second column indicate table positions before
adding the most recent GP (IE the change in table position).

GPs - number of GPs counted for each driver (from the last 100)

[-1] [+1], etc. - number of GPs deleted/added to driver's record since
the last event
PP - number of Pole Positions (in the last 100)
W - number of Wins (in the last 100)
FL - number of Fastest Laps (in the last 100)
Points - these are 'my' points, allocated for many & various things, not
just wins, poles, f.laps, etc.
[Change] - the change in points after adding the most recent GP data
** - current drivers

All-time Top 60
===============

The addition of the 2008 Canadian GP results changes the career averages
for the six current drivers who are ranked in the all-time top 60.

None of the six scored enough points in Montreal to change their rankings.
All except David Coulthard suffered a slight fall in average.

Apology

I made a rather large faux pas in the Monaco rankings when I confused myself
while calculating Lewis Hamilton's average. I calculated his average using
75% of his full average instead of the correct 50%, evelating him into the
top 10 before his time. Apparently no one noticed - or at least didn't draw
it to my attention.

Current drivers are indicated by a '*'. Their averages are volatile and
will fluctuate from race to race.

Drivers with a limited number of starts are indicated by '%1', '%2' or
'%3' showing those with 25%, 50% and 75% of their respective averages.
