DEERE ABC

danica was not the first woman to win a race in an
"open wheel" racing series. that title belongs to
Shirley Muldowney.

Drag Racing is, at best, described as a brief sprint or dash.
It hardly constitutes, by any stretch of the imagination, a race.
Nor are the drivers, particularly in its top tiers, considered to
be, in any manner manner whatsoever, athletes (e.g., see the
still dominating and currently active elderly 59 year old, over
weight and walking wounded Funny Car driver John Force).

The reason drag racing is better than the IRL is because you know it's
going to be over quickly.

who ever wrote that about danica and shirley muldowney is partially
correct. while Shirley was racing in drags since the early 60's it
was janet Guthrie who first raced open wheel, and that was at Indy in
1977

How soon they forget...

The first woman to drive an Indy car in a race was Arlene Hiss, Mike
Hiss's wife. Phoenix, 1977. She was so slow that they flagged her
off. My recollection is that it was a stunt with the purpose of
spoiling Guthrie going down as the first.

it was a stunt, she never actually qualified and therefore is not
considered the first, which is why I didn't mention it. this was all
about the dot being typical ;-)

She was in it, and finished 14th. Here's the box score:

http :// motorsport,com /stats/champ/data/ch197601.pdf

No qualifying times, but her lifetime stats suggest she qualified:

http :// motorsport,com /stats/champ/qdriver.asp?D=Arlene_Hiss

Stats also suggest she finished, as does "flagged" in the box score
(albeit 22 laps down). I saw that race on TV, and distinctly remember
them flagging her off before the end as too slow. I guess the record
keepers weren't too detail minded back then.

Note that she did beat Foyt, as did Guthrie one year at Indy. :-)

Despite all that, I concur that it was a stunt. IMHO, a pretty slimy
thing to pull on Guthrie.

Muldowney was winning races and championships before Wilson's F1
accomplishments. But that takes nothing away from what Wilson did.

The real point is that the announcers were being ignorant pinheads
when they declared Danica to be the first female race winner ever.
Being Ms. First in Indy cars is more than enough. And she even did it
post-split, competing against everyone. No Dr. Jack field fillers to
pad the win.

On the other hand, it's not like she did it in a roadster.

Wasn't Danica's win in Japan contested without the Champ Cars, who were
at Long Beach?

Yeah, you're right. I guess I just got caught up in Danicamania.

They'll need to put an asterisk in the record book. :-)
