OT - ALMS @ Lime Rock 2008

The weekend was an absolute blast. I got to Lime Rock pumped about the
changes. What they've done thus far is:

1 - repave entire original course
2 - made new uphill
3 - made new West Bend/Loop
4 - Install FIA-grade concrete curbing around the circuit
5 - add new spectator areas

The new surface was nice and smooth, had plenty of grip, and held up
surprisingly well. The curbing made many corners easier to attack
aggressively. The new sections were a bit of a mix. The new uphill was
somewhat safer, but it made for a much busier braking section before
reaching it. The new loop at West Bend (which we named 'Posey's Mosey')
was another mixed bag. It was a bit of a shame to lose that nice, fast
turn at West Bend. On the other hand, the new loop with its decreasing
radius apex (actually, there were really 2) made for some interesting
lines and the braking zone did make it a slightly better passing zone.
It did reduce the speed going into the downhill, which was the main
safety concern. Overall, I think I like it.

The racing action was fun. I was stationed at 9 (West Bend) Friday and
10 (before the bridge) Saturday, so I had plenty of exposure to that new
section. One of the things IMSA asked us to do was watch for cars
shortcutting the apexes. These apex violations were used to take away
fast laps from several cars. IMO it was a bunch of BS and they shouldn't
have had us doing it anyway. Oh well, we do what we're told.

I can't say it enough: CONGRATS HIGHCROFT!!! It was an absolute treat to
see that car win. First of all, you have a Connecticut based team
winning at their home track, and its a team that is really fun and
welcoming in the paddock. Then you have the drivers. David Brabham is an
absolute class act. Scott Sharp is one of Lime Rock's favorite sons,
especially with the SCCA folks. His dad, Bob Sharp, was a well-loved
SCCA champion and raced a lot at Lime Rock back in the day. He'd bring
little Scotty and various SCCA folks would keep an eye on him while his
dad was racing. Then Little Scotty grew up, and now he's returned in a
top-flight sports car prototype. He comes home and co-pilots the car to
victory. We were beside ourselves with glee.

I didn't get a chance to get into the paddock for pics, since our
schedule was so tight, so here be some examples of what I got during the
recon laps from just before the bridge:

Glad you had a great time. Wish I was there.

Yep, great to see them win the first overall race for Acura after all
the hard work they've done developing it. Just wished that Johansson
bloke was driving at the time. ;-)

Good photos! Loved the Dyson tribute, pity the newer car ended up in a
crumpled heap after the very rare mistake by Guy Smith. :-(

Yeah, he was a prime example of the over-ambitious overtaking the new
uphill provoked.
