Caught the Mid-Ohio ALMS on Universal HD last night

Never saw one before. So, basically, it's four races running at once on
the same track?

And, one of the races has only two cars that are virtually identical, on
the same team, and both repeatedly penalized for contact with each other?

Then...car on fire, man on fire, pit on fire...does a pit normally explode
during each race? lol...that was a good one, too...BOOM

Yea, those pit fires where people are severely injured are "good".

Welcome to the wonderful world of sports car racing... :-)

ALMS, like the 24 Hours of Le Mans, runs 4 classes of cars during the
race - two prototype classes (LMP1 & LMP2) and two GT classes (GT1 &
GT2). They compete for being victorious within their own class, as well
as for overall position. Thus, the LMP1 and LMP2 cars battle against
each other for the overall victory as well as their respective class
victories.

The class with only 2 cars is GT1. Basically, Corvette Racing drove away
all the competition with their brutally dominant form. They had some
competition from Aston Martin two years ago, but they decided to focus
on European racing instead (or, more like they only had the money to
race in Europe) and the Corvettes have basically been fighting each
other this season and last season. But, just because they don't have any
competition from other teams doesn't mean that there isn't competition.
The two cars are fighting each other fiercely for the championship. It
got a wee bit hot at Mid-Ohio.

That was highly unusual. I believe the sanctioning body and the track
are going to take steps to ensure that doesn't happen again.

As fun as it might have seemed on TV, it is several magnitudes better in
person. The sights and sounds of the different cars (especially the
sounds) are amazing. You also get a much better appreciation for their
speed. Going to an ALMS race made me fall in love with racing in ways
that no other series could. Excellent stuff!

After seeing most forms of motorsport, live and on TV...ALMS is one of
those series that is appreciated best in person.
Amazing sights and sounds for sure.

I haven't missed an ALMS race on TV or locally at Mosport since the first
one, and I'm actually catching up on Utah one that I taped while away on
business and had almost let it slip through the cracks.

This season has been exceptional, no question about it. And so far the first
hour of the one from Utah has been nothing short of magnificent!

I remember Scott Atherton (from ALMS) saying a few years-ago how the P2
series would evolve into the one to watch (and I kind of wondered why the
second rated cars would be that way), and he was proved right. Especially
this season. What an amazing series. As a watcher of the old IMSA GTP
series years ago, I think that what they have on hand now represents some of
the best sports car racing that I have seen. But, there's a lot to be said
about Grand-AM too; except that they're a tad bit slower and lower tech but
with a lot of great drivers.

I was listening to Radio Lemans last June during the time that Speed wasn't
covering it, and they got an email from a fan asking why Grand-AM wasn't part
of the 24 hours of Lemans. Apparently the major hurdle technology-wise was
that they were so slow that they would be competing with the GT1's!

In the end, when you add both series up, sports car racing in North America
has never been this healthy. I can't wait for Mosport's ALMS race in August
and plan on a trip to Watkins to check out the Grand-AM series one day as
well.
