Versus and ABC in new Indy Car TV Deal

ABC to air the Indy 500 and 4 other races. The rest will be on Versus.

Sounds like progress... Let's see; four races on national TV and 14 on a
cable channel... yea, great way to build interest in your sport...

I just hope those Bull-Riding events don't run long...

America's Top 201--250

Other channels that Dish Network subscribers will enjoy aftter they
upgrade to the "America's Top 250" package for Versus and the IRL:

GolTV
24-hour network in the United States dedicated to soccer.

CNBC World
CNBC World combines the resources of CNBC Asia and CNBC Europe ...

mun2 is a national Cable TV station aimed at young Latinos in the
United States ... Unlike Telemundo, a large segment of mun2's
programming is in English. ...

Interesting mix. They tend to make these packages as diverse (i.e.,
scattered) as possible, so people will have to subscribe to more than
they really want.

I get Versus (nee OLN) in a "Sports and Info" tier that we subscribe
to because my wife insisted we get Bloomberg TV. The tier includes
DIY channel, Golf, Military, Discovery Kids, and two of the minor
ESPN's.

I don't think my wife feels she got a deal; all she wanted was
Bloomberg. But it worked out well for me, especially those times when
races were bumped onto ESPN Classic. And when there are no races on,
I can watch people build stuff on DIY and destroy stuff on Military.

My recollection is that when our cable provider first carried Speed,
they split the channel with OLN. At that time OLN was more about
stuff like hiking and recreational cycling. I had a bitter e-mail
exchange with the cable company about how Speed needed its own full
channel. Ironic that the channel that blocked half of my Speed
reception is now my savior.

As long as they don't hire Todd Harris...

At the risk of being argumentative, viewership on Versus couldn't be
less than ESPN. Versus may be a tougher sell for team sponsorships,
though.

AFAIK, Versus generally is in the same cable/satellite packages as
Speed, exc w/ Dish.

Nothing to argue about. Good to hear that it's usually in the same
package as Speed. Like I mentioned, at one time it and Speed shared a
channel.

On Cox in Northern Virginia Speed/ESPN/ESPN2 are part of extended
basic. Still analog, so you don't even need a box. VS is on a
digital tier. I suspect fewer households here currently get VS than
get the others. Fortunately, I get that tier.

Of course, once everyone hears that they need it to get the IRL races,
they'll all subscribe. That will generate more income for the cable
company, which will respond by cutting rates. Win-win all around.

I, for one, hope they give Salem, Eldora, and DuQuoin at least as much
coverage as Winchester.

Hmmm... maybe they can combine some coverage.... The "Whitetail Hunting
at the Glenn 200" where drivers must drive with a carcass strapped over
the engine cover for at least 10 laps and earn bonus championship points
if their crew chief takes down a stag during the event...

How many points did Shorty score at RA?

Come NHL season, their program schedule schedule improves.

Maybe another great combination, IRL ice races?

Hmmm... studded tires and racing in the snow... I'm all for that!

And with the way things have been going in the pits lately, traction control
for use in the pits only.

<hears loud roar of approval from the crews>

It kind of makes you wonder just what kind of a deal old Tony had all
these years with ABC ?????

Ya think???? Nahhhhh. We were told the IRL always got TV money for
each and every race and never had to pay. I believe each and every
word I read on the internet.

Back when it was IRL, that's how it worked. But now that it's been
diluted with "transition teams" they don't quite have the same
product. Think of this as kind of a middle ground between what IRL
had and CCWS's last TV deal.

Once I figured out what Versus is, and found that I have it, I'm
happy. There'll be more coverage. More pre-race and wrap-up.
Shouldn't be any more timed races. Repeats during the week, in case
I'm away over the weekend.

If they hire good announcers, it ought to be like when IRL was on
Speed.
