As the Guiness Guys say, BRILLIANT

As the Guinness Guys say, BRILLIANT
Leafy, invasive, irritating kudzu could be NASCAR's fuel of the future
By Ryan McGee ESPN The Magazine June 26, 2008
http :// sports,es pn.go,com /rpm/nascar/cup/columns/story?columnist=mcgee_ryan&id=3461697

But now news has arrived that could solve both those problems with one sweep of
the weed eater. It's a green solution that could wean the sport off its
dependency on oil and allow it to reconnect with its southern blue-collar past
all at the same time. A fuel source that is cheap, is easy to find and, as we
have just learned, can produce ethanol, the same loud, fast gas that currently
powers the Indy Racing League.
Kudzu.
Or, as it is often referred to in the South: @#$! kudzu!
It is an irritating, leafy vine that grows at the
Talladega-like speed of 60 feet per year.

Here's another noxious weed - Virginia Creeper. It has taken me over
5 years to rid my yard of the sneaky little stringers - they had
already killed off my honeysuckle hedge.

It'd seem a dayum sight smarter to use kudzu for ethanol instead of corn in
a world where famine threatens in many countries.

That is...if'n yer engines are ethanol-ready. Small engines (and their fuel
lines, filters, carb diaphragms, gaskets etc) mostly ain't. I've hired on at
a local (two blocks away) lawn mower shop and the owner preaches daily that
folks oughtta not use anything but high test in their mowers, trimmers, leaf
blowers, saws or what-not...the local ethanol-mixed lower grades of gas are
screwing up the performance and life expectancy of all the above mo-chines.
And yer mileage in the family auto is also prolly suffering.

That's all lame-assed BS coming from chicken little who is afraid of
change.

Change the gaskets filters and seals and kwityerbitchin IMHO is my
response to your owner. Hell if he had any marketing skills he would
be out front offering conversion kits / rebuilds.

WTF do you think you know about me or my boss to be calling somebody
'chicken little'??

How much sense does it make to be proposing conversion kits that would
likely be at a cost of a quarter of the original purchase price of trimmers,
blowers or saws (which our customers already own) versus the additional 25
cents per gallon for the (maybe) 5 gallons of gas they use each season??

Sorry to have insulted you so, could have been written much better
without the addition of friday night alcohol. 8^)

But my basic premise still stands. You have an opportunity to make
money, or you can choose to pretend the world is not changing.
Personally I hope you both choose to make money.

Noted! ;->

Waited till I got back to the shop today to do a little checking...we have a
number of cross-reference catalogs and keep a stock of carb repair/overhaul
kits on hand.

Care to guess how many differents carb brands we cover? Over 40.

Care to guess how many different kits are available for all the types of
small engines we service? Twenty seven pages in two of the catalogs with
three columns of carb numbers and fifty carbs per column = 4050 kits...in
just the 2 catalogs I glanced through...3 other catalogs in the back room
were a tad too greasy-thumbed-over to read well.

We don't spec/design/manufacture carb kits. The owner sez he's never heard
of anyone doing any development on ethanol-tolerant materials...they just
don't care. We can only sell what they manufacture...and advise folks how
to best avoid the misery.

--
Tom in Bristol...s'posing the Carter folks may have done some material spec
review for NASCAR...or they might in the future. (now izzit kinda-sorta on
topic again?)

Good! They can have all that crap they can find and cut. It is rampant
in these parts, and I guess has been for decades now. Didn't that mess
get introduced over here at some World's Fair back in the day?

Yeppers..."Kudzu was introduced to the United States in 1876 at the
Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Countries were invited
to build exhibits to celebrate the 100th birthday of the U.S. The Japanese
government constructed a beautiful garden filled with plants from their
country." http :// www .maxshores,com /kudzu/

Can ya imagine these folks trying to do their 'commercial scale' test fields
of this stuff suddenly finding it spread throughout another two states?!?!
LOL
