Fluke Win

I only chalk today's results to a fluke occurrence where drivers who
would have finished last are nothing but lucky to have finished where
they did today. Not even Mike Helton could have screwed this race up
as bad as the weather did. This was the only exciting thing about
this race.

Daytona next week should be a good weekend for speed.

Okay by me - I didn't understand all the booing at Kurt - he's rarely
been a target lately; were they booing because the race ended right
then and all the drivers in front were usually in the back?

Not sure why, but Kurt isn't really popular in the northeast. But,
the fans probably were also pissed that the race ended when it did.
Be interesting to see if Bruton will try to install lights; IIRC, that
was one of the concessions the Bahres had to make, and I thought in
perpetuity regardless of ownership, to NOT have lights on the track.

My guess: No lights. Bruton will probably keep the 2nd Loudon date
as-is (it is the first "Chase race") and it continues on as a day
race. But IMO, he will likely move this late June date to some other
SMI track, maybe even Kentucky.

Bruton doesn't buy existing Cup tracks to run them as-is anymore, he
buys them as much for their spot(s) on the calendar as he does
anything (North Wilkesboro, Rockingham, etc). I certainly think Loudon
is going to lose at least 1 date, if not both dates, in the coming
years...He just bought Kentucky....Las Vegas "wants" a 2nd
date...Something will happen soon enough, and Loudon will be part of
the losing end of it, you watch.

I'd say you will be wrong on both...
My guess, judging from the morning press conference,
is that they will have lights... they will run two races....
and there will be either a reconfig of the track, or, a new one!
He hinted around there being tracks that don't do as well as Loudon,
that would be on the block first..

Very unlikely... if he goes the 'new track' route, he'll
want them both for sure...

Right, and Rick Hendrick said he wouldn't have room for Junior this
year, and that he was still backing Casey Mears as of last week too.

We'll just have to agree to disagree. Bruton is a predator, he didn't
buy Loudon "just" to add it to his portfolio. At least one of those
dates is already history, us general public-types just haven't been
told about it yet.

I'm just going by what I saw at the press conference...
He was very thorough with his plans, and was not vague
at all.
He talked of already having engineers there doing topo maps,
and did not rule out building a new track, on the property,
and keeping the current one for maybe the SCCA, WKA, Vintage,
and motorcycle racing.

He also outlined how they would go about making changes,
without losing a race. Similar to what he did in Bristol.

When asked if there were any certain decisions made,
he said only two.
There will be no drag strip, and he will keep both dates there.

What he was emphatic about, was that he is in the business of making
money. And when he takes something on that doesn't, he nips it.
Cuts it off.
Pretty much his exact words.
He went on to say that Loudon had over 105,000 people there Sunday,
and that there are places that draw about half that..
I think there was an implication there as well....
Where he said it after the first part....

I can't see him reconfiguring that track, and installing lights,
or building a new track on the property, and then dumping the dates...

>We'll just have to agree to disagree. Bruton is a predator, he didn't
>buy Loudon "just" to add it to his portfolio.

Of course not.
He bought it to make money, he was very clear about that.

> At least one of those

Maybe.
But I know both races are on for next year..

Which 'morning press conference', Dan? I saw Jerry Gappens' comments at

Was there one today with O. Bruton?

Okay by me - I didn't understand all the booing at Kurt

I think some of the booing was fall_out to NASCARS decision to call it a day

- he's rarely
been a target lately; were they booing because the race ended right

Better to have a fluke win than a well raced last place.

Nothing fluke about it, the best strategy won.

Luck is a stretch on strategy.
