Fireworks on the 4th

Fireworks on the 4th

Too bad RASN shuts down on Fridays & especially on holiday weekends
cuz there's BIG NEWS that could be discussed.
MM to HMS'09 in #5, 2yr contract, Full-Time'09 at least.
Has Rick Hendrick lost his mind?

Speaking of losing his mind--NFL Randy Moss now owns 50% of a
long-time CTS race team of Morgan-David Dollar. Who's gonna be
the driver at 7/12 Kentucky? Willie Allen a white Willie who
has had 27sts since '05 in CTS & 4sts in NNS.

Harvick troubled by night racing

Who is this Kevin Harvick that's been making sense since
becoming an owner?

I would rather go to a night race in the summer, instead of sitting in
the 90 degree heat. A *much* more enjoyable experience.

I don't know that anyone's ever said Harvick isn't an intelligent
guy. Kinda rash & impetuous in his first few years, but not
lacking in brains.

Here is the key point he makes (which the article author missed
entirely): "I think in one sense NASCAR has to kind of look at
itself and say, 'Why are we fighting the teams for the same
sponsors?'" That's in the context of the #40 team shutting down,
the more-or-less unspoken story behind that is that Ganassi had
expected Coors to sponsor the team, until NASCAR stole the
sponsorship. And Harvick is right - NASCAR should not be
competing with the teams for sponsors, it's not in their long
term interest. Whether NASCAR is smart enough to see that, we
shall see (my bet would be no...)

i don't see why coors couldn't have stayed with CGR despite their
"official beer of nascar" sponsorship, bud was always still on the 8
while it was also the "official beer" i do believe though coors is
running part time sponsorship on the 01, is it not?

So you don't think Mark will make the Chase in '09?

Hey, I will. Mark won't make the Chase next year because he is past his
prime. At least behind the wheel. Hey, I am the same age. There are
things that I excelled at 30 years ago that I don't do that well anymore,
fitness aside. There are things I do now that I wouldn't have dreamed of
doing 30 years ago.

Disagree. Mark is still a great driver even at age 50.

Hell, DES finished 2nd in points when he was 49 in 2000 under the
*old* points system, and was a favorite to win the championship in
2001 at age 50.

There is no reason why MM can't win a championship or at least be a
contender for one in the watered down format that they are now using.

I meant to add that Rusty finished 8th in points in his final yr at
age 48, and that was when only 10 cars made the chase.

I think the question is whether he's among the dozen best drivers to get
into the chase.

Winning races is not a requirement for making the chase. A third of the
current top dozen drivers have not won a race this year. Its all in the
points.

What Mark CAN do is to be consistent. Even if he doesn't win a lot of
races, he still finishes reasonably well. So the question of whether he
can get into the chase is more dependent on whether he can finish
consistently well.

So far, MM's got the same number of T5s and T10s as Harvick (in the
chase) but has run 5 fewer races.

If this http :// tinyurl, com /67o6e9 is possible then MM making the Chase
is certainly possible. And there was a 71 yr old that climbed Mt
Everest last yr. Age is just a number.

I would tend to agree with you. Mark did not do as well as Truex
last year or this, in (presumably) equal equipment, and despite
Mark cherry-picking his races. Hendrick's equipment is top-notch,
but it can't make up entirely for slower reflexes or fatigue in
the latter part of the season.

I predict 7 top 5, 12-14 top 10, no wins, finish between 15-20
in the points.

John

(figuring no-one will remember that by the end of next year)

You're right. He didn't do as well as Truex, he did better, both this year
and last. Mark has higher percentages of top 5's, and top 10's, and has
averaged more points per race that Truex in '07 and '08.

Considering Mark still works out-5-6 day per week, I doubt that fatigue will
be any more of a factor for him than anyone else. Plus he no longer has his
son's career as a distraction.

I'll remember. (And I'll rub it in, too) 8^D

Sure. Martin has never lacked for a competitive car and he's never gotten
it done. The ranks of contenders for the Chase will continue to show more
drive than Martin (IMHO), and he'll be the bride's maid again.
