He never fully retired. He said he was retiring from running Cup full-time,
and unless these rumors are confirmed, none of that has changed.

Have a look at the point standings. Martin is only a handful of points
behind Mears, despite having run 4 fewer races. Martin has more top 5's and
top 10's as well.
Keep in mind that Mark is about the same age as DE was when he died. DE was
one of the favorites to win the Cup that year. Not all drivers lose their
stuff when they get older. And just to clarify, I am not saying that MM=DE.
I'm just sayin' that not all drivers go out like Petty & Waltrip.
