That's because ethanol is a very good octane enhancer, while at
the same time being relatively non-toxic (compared to tetraethyl
lead or MTBE).

Shouldn't, to any meaningful degree. Everything else being
completely equal, you might see a 1% or 2% change, but in the
real world that'd be hidden by other variables (wind, temp,
time spent waiting on traffic lights, etc).

T'was 7/1/08 when I scribed the above...on 7/8/08 I added $10 worth of
additional hi-test to get me thru till Friday when the local Food City
stations (yeah...of Food City 500 fame!) drop the price of their hi-test
down to match whatever is the price of their mid-range.

That Friday I filled up...went 335.3 miles on a total of 17.98 gallons or
19.76 mpg. The most recent mileage check on the low-range stuff was at 16.5
mpg. My calcs show that to be a 20% improvement. I dun't b'leeve I was any
more e-z on the throttle than before...shrug.

was this on ethanol or just regular unblended gas?
I put 13.75 gallons in my car, and went about 248 miles, 18 mpg on

Ouch! You must live with your right foot on the floor. I had a Grand Am
with a 3.4 and my average tankful always hovered around 28mpg in the summer.
My driving patterns are about 60% rural roads, 40% highway. On the highway,
I lock cruise at 74mph and around town I don't take it easy as I take off
from a stop sign. Always got over 24 around town and nicely into the 30's
on the highway. I always filled her up with 87 octane unless I happened to
stop in at the reservation, and then I stooped to 86 octane. 18mpg out of a
GM 3.4L is horrible mileage.

yeah it's going into the shop because the mileage just ain't right. I
don't have a lead foot by any means, and i watch my acceleration
keeping the shift points below 2500 rpm (automatic), and use cruise
control whenever possible. that 18mpg was actually a bit of an
overshoot, its probably around 15 or 16, i didn't quite get 248 miles,
i rounded up to 400 km, which is 248 miles, i probably got closer to
390km. My driving is probably 85-90% rural driving too, hardly any
lights or stop signs. the car only has 120,000 kms on it too.

My testing was the locally available pump gas where the label sez it 'may
contain up to (I think) 10% ethanol'...not the 85% E-85 available for some
of the 'flexi-fuel' cars sold these days.

My boss (with the mower shop) said he gets better mileage with hi-test than
regular (both 'may contain blah-blah') so I decided to try it out, and I
re-filled with the hi-test so will see if the results are similar this time.
