OT: NHRA shortening fastest races...

It is ridiculous to assume that now just because they are only running 1000
feet that the ‘tuners’ would not be as aggressive in the setup as they were
when running 1320 feet. The goal of the sport is to be the first driver to
pass the finish line no matter if its 1000 feet or 1320 feet. Running 320
feet less is not going to stop ‘Engine Grenades’. The ‘tuners’ will be
pushing the limit no matter if its 1000 feet or 1320 feet. They will have
just as many ‘Engine Grenades’ at 1000 feet as they had at 1320 feet. Any
casual observer of the sport knows these facts well.
Once again only running 1000 feet doesn’t do ANYTHING to remove the steel
rebar enforced concrete poles and large cheery pickers at the end of the
safety run off area. Until the NHRA removes these obvious deadly hazards
from the safety run off area they will continue to have deadly consequences.

Casual observors don't really know the "facts" all that well.
I think the drivers themselves know a few more facts than most observors.
And many of the drivers have already petitioned for the 1000ft track.
The engine tune is not really the key factor in these car's performance.
It's the clutch and drivetrain setup that makes these cars accelerate so quickly from point A to
point B. Most times, races are won by the crew chief who makes the right adjustments to get the
power to the ground better than anyone else. And most times the winning car isn't the one with the
most HP or the best tune.

More to the point, engine tune has little to do with a blowup like
Kalitta's. Most likely an injector stuck open, a cylinder
hydrauliced, broke the crank, and the bottom of the engine
dismantled itself. That sort of part failure could happen just
as easily at 600 feet as 1200.

More to the point, engine tune has little to do with a blowup like

Just last night on Wind Tunnel, Gary Scelzi said, the drivers wanted to
run the entire 1320, and that the changes needed to be made to the
tracks and cars to improve safety.
