The other day there were a bunch of stills that looked like they would be
videos but if you played them, they were just the still on the utube screen
for the duration of the clip. Here's a link to one of the stills from
another site.

Thanks, Mike.

That is the only other picture that I've seen, and I still can't find
any from other angles.

Don Prudhomme, is pretty much calling it a freak accident.

Maybe so, but the cars are getting faster, and tracks like the one in
Englishtown, N.J., are obsolete for cars traveling over 300MPH,

After watching the races on Sunday, seeing the track layout, and
reading many comments from both drivers and fans, I hope they do
something to improve safety at all tracks like that.

Much like Daytona and Talladega are obsolete for today's stockers...
I mean really.
It's pretty silly to have such huge, banked tracks, if you have
to restrict the engines by as much as they do..
But.... unlike the SMI tracks, nothing will ever be done to improve them.

using that same logic, which tracks frequented by open wheelers are now
obsolete?

Should be taken up in an open wheel forum...
I'm talking about NASCAR...

But these two series share many of the same tracks...and the open
wheelers are much faster today than ever..

and you feel comfortable discussing NHRA tracks in a NASCAR forum...

I thought there was a difference between death/safety/expertise,
as opposed to comparing cars..
Your point is well taken though... you're right.

The Kalitta story was more of a news item, and honestly,
I don't mind drifting from NASCAR if it's newsworthy.
But I do stay away from NASCAR/IRL/NHRA/ASA whatever comparisons
as a rule..
But to get to your point,
I don't recall IRL racing on Daytona and Talladega.
Does the IRL run restrictor plates at some tracks?
I don't see any connection between them both
running Richmond for instance.

I was trying to bring out that even though the pointy cars are much
faster at every venue they compete at than ever before, even more so
that cup cars have increased in speeds for the most part, I've never
heard anyone mention the increase in speeds of the pointy cars have made
the tracks they compete at obsolete.

Because they haven't..
If you say "we have to slow these cars down
by taking away a few hundred HP" at a track,
then the cars have outgrown the track.
So far... they have not done that with the IRL cars.
(IIRC)

They've been fiddling with displacement and boost limits
for as long as I can remember.

NASCAR seems to be the only top tier race promoter that feels 200+ mph
is a bad thing...

NHRA will to if a very freak accident ever happens when one of those
rockets suddenly darts left or right and flies into the stands.

NASCAR typically has people seated completely around the oval and it
would be very ugly if another Bobby Allison crash happened and the catch
fence failed more than it did at Talladega. Yes, they have raised and
reinforced the fences since then, but do we really want to find out if
they will hold two tons flying over 200mph?

Drag racing has had more than a pile of "close calls" with equipment
(blowers, clutches, slicks, bodies) launching into the stratosphere, and have
managed to tie the offending pieces down to prevent a recurrance.
Shithouse luck?
Maybe.

I certainly agree that at some point an accident like the engine into
the stands at LeMans will happen again, but I'm not sure any one type
of racing has a lock on it.
Well,...maybe Rally.
Point is, if racing were not dangerous, would there be fans?

at the rate NASCAR attendance is going, the only concern might be for
the camera man/woman... :-)
