Tony/Gibbs may be splitting?

The rumor mill is in motion.

Tony may be buying into Haas CNC, a Hendrick satellite team.

hmmm, interesting, to say the least

Wouldn't surprise me. Everyone was wondering what would happen when JGR
switched to Toyota, with Tony being a Chevy man, and having continuing ties
with them.

It would surprise me. I can't see Stewart having any interest at
all in ownership in Cup, or in NASCAR at all. I mean, he hasn't
shown any interest in having a Busch team, which is pretty much
de rigueur for a driver heading into ownership.

Nor could I see Stewart choosing to run for a 3rd tier team like
Haas CNC, when he could have a seat at RCR (top tier) or DEI
(second tier) pretty much for the asking.

My guess is that when Stewart is tired of running for Gibbs (which
could happen any year) he'll retire from Cup completely, and focus
on his dirt teams, his race track, the occasional Nationwide race
in one of Harvick's cars, and mostly on talking Penske or Andretti
into a ride at Indy.

I kinda felt something was/is up when Gibbs announced with Toy and Tony said
he wasn't worrying about his contract, he was concentrating on the Chase.
Then after the Chase was over, still no signing.

BTW, where did you hear that?

Re: Tony/Gibbs may be splitting?

ESPN. COM stated Stewart told Gibbs officials he would like to be
released from his final year. Gibbs said no way he is driving for us and
that it.
It also stated Stewart was looking into buying into Haas/CNC racing.
Stewart would have a 50 percent partnership with them. And he would
drive one of their cars.
So tony will be with Joe Gibbs racing till the end of 2009. As for the
buying into Hass racing who knows.

I wouldn't bet on Gibbs staying with their firm "no way." They may
get better press, and be able to sign a young, talented driver who
WANTS to drive for them, if they let Tony go early. It doesn't make
for the best conditions for the whole team/owner with an unhappy apple
in the bushel.

I think the smartest thiung he can do is to buy into HAAS and keep
driving for JGR.
Otherwise he will always be a midpack Michael Waltrip.
I assume he still wants to win, not disappear down the robbie gordon
rabbit hole.

I suspect that might not be an option, although "buy into Haas and drive
somewhere else" might be.

Driving a Toyota and owning a part of a Chevy team might not be acceptable
to Chevy and/or Toyota. I'm betting however it might work out, it'd have to
work out with him driving and owning for the same manufacturer (presumably
Chevy).

OTOH, to throw out one of the scenarios that's been flung about this week,
his contract and Casey Mears' contract expire simultaneously. Taking over
Casey's seat at Hendrick, sharing a shop with Junior, and owning all or part
of the Hendrick-supported Haas CNC team doesn't actually look from here like
it's got a downside from Tony's side.

OT3H, if they try to do it before end-of-09, he's not only got to get
clearance from JGR and HD to buy out his contract (I seriously doubt HD
could get clear to follow him a year early, and might not want to---it was
Bob Nardelli who was the big NASCAR/Stewart fan, not current management),
he's got to work out Casey being bought out and getting an okay from
Kellogg's.

OT4H, I could picture both Kellogg's and Smoke being deeply pleased to have
a driver named Tony sporting Tony the Tiger. (Smoke has commented, eons ago
and in other contexts, that his grandmother used to call him that as a
toddler, actually, and it's a nickname with some sentimental meaning to
him.)

--pig, noting that OTOH in this case must mean "on the other hoof" rather
than hand, since she racked up four of them. :)
