Improving the Richard Petty Driving Experience

Improving the Richard Petty Driving Experience

I got a survey from RPDE the other day. One of the things they asked
about was what they could do to improve the experience.

My thought was to offer their customers the choice between driving a
current style Cup car or a classic Cup car. I'd sign up for another
experience tomorrow if I could drive a Superbird, Charger Daytona,
Ford Torino Talladega or Mercury Cyclone.

How about the rest of you? Would the chance to drive a classic race
car make you more likely to spend some $$$ at RPDE? If you could pick
one, what would it be? Mine would be a #43 Petty Superbird.

Have you seen the prices for these classics????? Can you imagine what they
would have to charge for the chance????

Not that I could afford it, but I'd have to agree with your choice. A 'Bird
it would be.

If I'm not mistaken, RPDE builds all of their own cars, so it's not
like they'd have to go out and buy authentic classic cars. Replicas
would work in this application. I guess they'd have to do some market
research to see if having classic cars would generate enough
additional revenue to cover the cost of building them. I kinda think
it would, but then maybe I'm overestimating the number of old farts
who remember the Birds, Daytonas, Talladegas and Cyclones....

I almost said something about replicas, but left it out.

I, for one, do remember, and it has been a life-long dream to own a 'Bird. A
dream that will most likely end the day I die ;)

Yep, a bird would be way cool.
I was with my high school friend the day in 1973 that he bought a 440
6-pack, four speed Superbird (a rare combination)... for $2,000.
(Remember, they couldn't GIVE them away back then). He sold it in 1975 for
$2,200 and thought he robbed the guy blind. 'Hindsight is 20/20'
indeed.....

Here's one going for a measly $275,000.00.

Then I won't tell you that I owned two of them. The first was an
orange 440 6-pack automatic which I traded back to the dealer about a
month after I got it for a Petty Blue 440 stick shift with a monstrous
Hurst shifter. :)

But so far no one has answered the question. Would you or would you
not be more likely to do a Petty Driving Experience if you could drive
a classic race car?

Only if I could drive both :)

I would not be interested in doing the Petty experience, regardless
of what they ran. It's watered down, Disneyfied simulation of a
race experience. Ideal for a lot of people, but not what I'd
be looking for.

If I was going to do something like that, I'd go for the Buck Baker
school (preferably at Rockingham). It's closer to real racing.
Or maybe the Finishline school over at New Symrna - late models,
not Cup cars, but they're a serious "how to race" school.

That's true. For the most part, a Petty Experience is simply the
chance to drive fast in a Cup style car. It's not meant to be any
kind formal instruction to enhance your skills as a race driver.

Now they do have something called the "Racing Experience" (80 laps)
and "Advanced Racing Experience" (40 laps) which they advertise as
personal driving instruction for the die hard racer. They're pretty
pricey so I don't think I'll be doing either one any time soon.

Andy Hillenburg's Fast Track High Performance Driving School. I heartily
endorse this product and/or service. Teaches leading, following, passing,
riding in a pack, coming in for a pit stop, etc. I last was there in '96,
the six schools I took were all at Charlotte. Now that Andy bought
Rockingham he's moving the school there, but he holds his schools at
multiple tracks. http :// www .fasttrackracing, com /. And you know why I'm
partial to Andy's school for other reasons too :)

Under the Alumni section of the page click on the Graduates link which takes
you to http :// www .fasttrackracing, com /Default.asp?Page=83 and look at the
list of names of who's racing now that took his school. Click the Alumni
Gallery and you'll see one of my favorite photos there ;)

If a Petty blue Superbird was made available, I'd have to think real hard
about not doing it.
