RPG The Lady in Black I TomS

The lady in black started selecting her courtiers early in the first
practice and several drivers will be starting in backup cars as a
result. Including Jimmie Johnson who managed to also wreck - slightly
- in his backup car. During the Nationwide race, I noticed that by
lap 50 there were 11 cars in the garage and there had only been one
wreck - a one car spin by Cousin Carl on lap 2. He smacked the wall
on lap 1 and cut down a tire the next lap. I don't think the Cup race
will be as bad but it should still be interesting.

Now, on to the picks.

Winner: Dale Earnhardt, Jr.

1. Michael Waltrip spent much of practice and qualifying (I think)
"brushing" the wall. He continues this practice in the race, but
still pulls out a top 20 finish.

2. Bill Elliot drove the Wood Brothers #21 into the 20th place
qualifying spot. In a moral victory for him and them, he cards a top
10 finish.

3. Patrick Carpentier has qualified on speed for every race he has
attempted this year. He improves on his 43rd starting position to
finish in the top 20.

4. Bobby Labonte helps the Petty cause by scoring a top 5.

5. Sterling Marlin drove the 40 car to a somewhat surprising 14th
place start. He finishes in the top 10.

Segment total going in - +10

Almost every car in the field was displaying a Darlington stripe, but
that didn't help my predictions any. Looks like I am going to have to
get a new crystal ball. Repairing the crack in the old one doesn't
seem to have helped. ((^:

0 Fourth. If he keeps finishing in the top 5 he'll pull out that
victory one of these races

0 24th, first car three laps down.

0 Got lapped early and never recovered.

0 Blown engine didn't help his finish any.

0 Finished 18th after quietly running in the top 10 for a
considerable portion of the night.

0 18 laps down. I think he tagged the wall a few times.

Y'know, for some years I moaned about the TV types going on about
Darlington stripes every time someone hit the wall, because that's
not a Darlington stripe.

Way back, before concrete, Darlington had an Armco guardrail around
the track. And back then, if a driver was really fast, he'd run
right up around the top of the track, especially in turns 3 & 4
(the wide end, which is now 1 & 2). The good guys would just brush
the Armco, and by the end of the race they'd have a bright shiny
stripe worn thru the paint on their car.

So the Darlington stripe wasn't the result of careless or incompetent
driving. It was a mark of true skill and car control. And thus it
annoyed me, in recent years, when someone tried to knock down the
wall and the TV's would go on about Darlington stripes.

But now, I think, after watching Sat nights race, the Darlington
stripe of old is back. The really fast guys are getting into the
wall and just keeping on going, faster than ever. It's a mark of
skill again, to have run fast enough to rub the wall at Darlington.
