Well, you'd have to say Stewart is the front runner, since Bobby
Labonte is apparently committed to stay at Petty. But Gibbs seems
very set on keeping him for his last contract year, and I can't
see Childress giving Stewart an ownership share either, which seems
to be on Stewart's wish-list.

Other top names who could be available are Biffle (who I'd say is
the leading candidate if he doesn't sign with Roush in the next
couple of weeks), Newman (who's said to be looking), Truex (who's
probably the strongest driver not with a top-tier team that's
available).

Then there's Montoya, who's clearly totally fed up with Ganassi
right now. And Reutimann is on a one-year contract and looking
at sponsorship issues (and I think he impressed a lot of people
last year).

And, I wouldn't be surprised if the driver of the #33 didn't turn
out to be Jeff Burton. That would give Childress the opportunity
to put a development driver in a car that's in the T35, with
Burton (who's a pretty good qualifier) getting the new car in on
time each week for the first 6 races.

interesting, we know Roush has to dump one, does Penske go back to two
car team? what would happen to DEI?

Montoya seems to have what it takes were he in a top notch ride

If Newman left, I think Penske still has quite a few options
(assuming Newman doesn't wait until the day after Homestead to
leave). They're top-notch cars, so I think they'd be attractive
to any quality driver in Cup looking for a new seat, or to a
driver in open wheel who might want to move over. Or they could
drop back to 2 cars for a year, altho I think that's unlikely
for sponsorship reasons.

Roush, I think, expects NASCAR to give him an extension, or play
loopholes, or somehow keep 5 teams. If he doesn't, and he does
resign Biffle (which he clearly wants to), then you have to look
at McMurray as being expendible. I don't know when his contract
expires, but we all know Roush will simply make the ride unattractive
(can't find sponsorship, move all the skilled crew to other teams
etc) if he needs a driver to leave. (an interesting wild card in
the Ford side of the world is Kvapil, who has suddenly turned into
a right respectable driver. I could see him as a candidate for
a ride with a top-tier team (altho probably not Penske) which
might give Roush an opening to slide off either McMurray or Ragan
to Yates).

If Truex leaves then DEI is to RCR as Haas is to Hendrick.

Yeah, I don't think Montoya will ever win a whole lot of races,
but he's got the skills to win a race or so per year on the ovals.
And he's definately got the ability to get his sponsor on the TV.

The hot rumor now, of course, is Gibbs looking to Montoya as a
replacement for Stewart, if they're forced to let him go. That
I something I could easily see - the Hispanic market is big enough
to Home Depot that the opportunity to do commercials in both
English and Espanol would have to be attractive.

I don't think Childress would be interested. He would want a
competitive driver...

What if GM (not General Motors) wanted him badly?

I guess it would depend on who Childress could offer up as an
alternative, then. If he can't propose someone GM likes as
much, then yeah, I guess he'd answer the dollars.

I gotta think, tho, that if GM is moving from Petty to Childress
it's because they want to win some races. And photogenic as
McMurray might be to the ad department, he doesn't seem likely
to be putting the brand up front too often.

My hope is that Richard will put Scott Wimmer in the 33.I`v watched Scoot
start from his Limitted Late Model days in Wausau Wi.I belive that he would
do a very good job at an all time ride. The Wimmers are very good people.

On the one hand, I agree with you, it would be nice to see Wimmer
get a chance. I think he's a nice guy, and deserving of another
chance after the DUI incident several years ago.

OTOH, I don't think there's any chance of it happening. Wimmer's
been driving in the Nationwide/Busch cars for Childress for a
couple of years now, and his performances simply aren't on the
same level as Harvick, Bowyer, and Burton in those cars. I don't
see anything to suggest he's capable of running with the guys
in the Cup series.

I'd be very surprised if Wimmer gets the 33 ride.
