Slow pit stops?

Slow pit stops?

What's the deal with all these slow pit stops?

Biff's team managed one 13.0 but all the rest were in the 14-18 second
range. I thought there were all these superb athletes on the pit crews
nowadays. So how come all the fat rednecks in years past could crack
out sub 14 second stops regularly and slip in a few sub 13's?

Wazzupwitdat?

Up until a few of years ago, it seems the "standard" was 16 - 17
seconds. 14 second pit stops have only been happening for a couple of
years.

I seem to remember that Benny Parsons offering $100 ( or maybe it was
$500) to all the members of a pit crew if they could pull off a 14
second stop. And that was only about 4 or 5 years ago.

That prize was offered if a team could pull off a 12 second pit stop.

technically, you're correct, but you make it sound like the target time
was 12.0, the $100 went to each member of any crew that performed a
complete (4 tires, fuel) stop under 13 seconds

You are right. My memory was a little off once again.

JG's first pit stop was 11.something - another one at 14.9. It all
depends on adjustments, I think.

And... two or four tires...

Kyle's last stop was in the 12's, Biff's was in the 14's...
Difference between winner, and loser often times...

A couple of weeks ago, I watched a little of an older
race on ESPN Classic.... I believe it was like 1985,
as Tim Richmond was in it.
Might have been N. Wilks. (?)

They spoke of one of the guys taking "forever" on his pit stop,
because it was like 42 seconds, when the average was between
25 and 30 seconds!!
And also something I found WAY different than today...
Trevor Boys, smacked the wall, slid down the track,
and landed right in front of the pit road entrance...
Because he was not in the groove, there was NO YELLOW!!
The car was like 30 feet from the racing!! and they retrived the car
with a wrecker!! UNDER GREEN!!
Today, a guy spins all by himself, doesn't hit anything,
keeps on going.... and the yellow comes out...

I often can't figure out why there is a caution here and not there -
the officials aren't at all consistent with those solo spins. (Well,
I guess that isn't such a surprise.)

Another question: What is a "dirt modified" car? Is it like what
they race at Eldora for the Prelude? My grandson's mother is marrying
a man who publishes a magazine (I think) about "dirt modified" racing
- my grandson is only 4 1/2, so "dirt modified" is all he knows when I
ask him what his new stepdad likes.... ;-)

_08.html is a pretty good picture of a dirt modified car....

Prelude's dirt late models, I *believe*, rather than modifieds. They're
similar, however---which is to say more like each other than either one is
like sprints or midgets or stock cars or Indy cars or F1 cars...... :)

Is this what you are referring to as Dirt Modifieds?

Good site.
It has pictures of DIRT Modifieds, Late Models and UMP/IMCA Modifieds, so
you can see the difference in the cars.

No, those are dirt late models. A dirt modified is more like a
sprint car(*), without the wing, but with a car-like body from the
engine back (so the front wheels are out in the open, but the
rear wheels are inside fenders like a stock car).

DIRT (all caps) is a sanctioning body for dirt modifieds. They
run big block engines, very powerful, very fast. Mostly in
the northeast. The other big group that sanctions dirt modifieds
is IMCA. They're oriented more to entry level and mid-tier
drivers, use a less powerful small block, and race pretty much
all over the country (IMCA also does pavement modifieds, which
are the same thing except raced on asphalt).

Thanks for the responses. The first picture - I thought it looked
like dirt late model mixed with a funny car, and that's what it is, in
looks. I'll have to find out what the stepdad really does...maybe he
can get my grandson into go-karts next year. That would be great!

Two things. One is almost all the stops were under green, which
means they were all 2 full cans. It takes about 14 seconds to
empty two full cans (quicker stops happen when they stop under
yellow before the end of a fuel run, and the tank fills before
the second can is empty).

The other is the new tire rule, where the carrier has to take it
all the way across the front (or back) of the car before he can
roll it to the wall. That's adding a couple of tenths compared
to last years times.
