Rpg Pocono I TomS

First race of a new segment. Let's see if I learned anything in the
first seg.

Winner: Mark Martin. Mark is starting third and was fourth in the
last practice. It'll be his day.

1. Ryan Newman scores a top 10 and moves into the top 12 for the
Chase.

2. Kyle Busch is starting in the rear after he wrecked his primary
car in Happy Hour. He'll finish in the rear with a finish of 30th or
worse.

3. Regan Smith is the highest starting rookie (4th). He will also be
the highest finishing rookie and within ten spots of where he started
- 14th or higher.

4. Dario Franchitti is making his first start after breaking his
ankle. He shows that all that "downtime" with Ashley can work wonders
for a man by finishing in the top 10.

5. AJ Allmindinger is the highest starting Toyota and will be the
highest finishing one also, even though he didn't practice worth spit.

First segment total - +14

Not much, apparently. But let's go through the numbers and see what
happens.

Congratulations to Kasey for a good win.

And what a difference a week makes!! last week in Dover there were
only 6 or 7 cars on the lead lap at the checkers. This week the first
car one lap down was in 35th!! And after one caution, JPM was the
lucky dog and he was 44 or 45 laps down at the time, because of a
wreck.

+0 Almost. He stayed in the top-5 the first half of the race, but
kept getting shuffled back during the pitstops. Ended up in 10th.

+0 He sniffed the top-10 most of the afternoon, but ended up in 18th
position. But he did close up on 12th place in the points and is now
only 10 points out of 12th.

+1 Crashed early when he tried to squeeze in front of Jamie Mac and
the hole wasn't big enough. Ended up in 43rd, 105 laps down. I can't
help but think that all the traveling did affect him, even though he
denied it.

+0 Neither end happened. Second rookie, right behind Michael
MacDowell, and in 28th position.

+0 Looks like he is going to need some more TLC from Ashley. Dario
got bounced around pretty well and ended up in 41st.

+0 Top Toy would be Vickers in second (nice run!) with Denny Hamlin on
his tail. AJ did finish a respectable 12th. I think that was his
highest finish ever.

Race total - +1

Segment total - +1

That's the difference between 25 second laps & 3 cautions, versus
55 second laps & 10 cautions. Takes some work to loose a lap at
Pocono (which, come to think about it, makes Harry Gant lapping
the field some years back fairly astounding).

It's made all the difference to that kid that they painted the
car silver. He just couldn't get it to go when it was blue.
