Petty/Boston Venture Deal

Petty/Boston Venture Deal

I just watched the news conference on SpeedTV about the Petty/Boston Venture
"merger/buyout".

I'm sorry to see the Petty family lose control, but at least they took steps
to save the storied organization. I hope that the new organization will
restore the Petty name to its former glory on the track.

Mike

OK--someone gets some quasi-RPG points for seeing
this coming earlier in the year.

It will be interesting to see what difference the
new management makes.

What I find interesting in what I've read (Scene Daily/Jayski...can't
connect to pettyracing because they've exceeded their bandwidth and can't
handle the traffic) is that nowhere does it say that Kyle will be the driver
of the 45 in the long run.

It will be interesting to see whether new management pushes Kyle out,
leaving him to see if he can find another ride (which is what he has said he
would do under those circumstances) and focus on VJ.

Kyle did say he would continue to drive. He did not say drive the 45, but
with what this press conference was about, I have no doubt it will be the
45.

Re: Petty/Boston Venture Deal

I dunno. There's part of me that thinks if he didn't specify, there might
be a reason. Not necessarily that anyone's said "Hey, Kyle, we're yanking
your ride"---way too early in the deal for that. But a sense that his ride
isn't as solid as Bobby's---that wouldn't surprise me a bit.

It may be that there's not much interest in writing up a contract for Kyle,
and/or that he's getting a sense that there may be pressure for him to step
down. My personal suspicion based on other events this season and comments
of his is that there's already *been* internal pressure for him to step out
of the car....,it just hasn't reached the "scuse me, Kyle, I said you're
DONE" stage yet.

They need more money coming in, they need better equipment and maybe
more/better people. But if they get all that, they should get competitive
again. And Bobby's showing he can be pretty competitive with what they have
now.

Kyle isn't. And it's not "I can do what I want whether I'm competitive or
not, it's me'n'my daddy's company" anymore.

So at the very least I suspect it's a matter of time: if they start pulling
all that together, they're going to want to replace Kyle. Maybe not
tomorrow, maybe not next week, but I will stick my neck out for a no-points
RPG and say that Kyle will NOT be in the 45 come Daytona 2009.

Kyle's day behind the wheel was already fading before today. That's why
he & Dale Jarrett are going to the tv booth.

As they said in the Movie the "Right Stuff." "Do you know what makes
these thing go? Funding! No bucks, no Buck Rodgers." Same applies to
racing cars.....

To retract my previous statement....

I was listening to Steve Post and Buddy Baker on Sirius this evening, and
they had a sound byte from Kyle that I'd not heard in which he expressly
stated that a lot of what he liked about the deal was "I'm not fired---I'll
be in that car next year."

I'm not so sure pig, I think Id' stay with my earlier prediction if'n I wuz
you. The Boston Venture folks are businessmen, pure and simple and despite
all the grand talk at the press conference, as soon as the honeymoon is
over, Kyle will be looking elsewhere for a ride I'm afraid. I've seen too
many mergers go sour to think otherwise.

Could be. I wouldn't give 15 cents for Kyle's chances in '10, but he might
be okay for 09.....

What I do think we may see, though, is that the 45 will become irrelevant,
the Petty *third* car, as they bring in a younger driver (McCumbee?) and
another number to be the second car to Labonte.

In other words, they may accept a year or so of "the cost of doing business"
including letting Kyle play while simply cutting him out of the meaningful
herd. Might be a form of audition, even: "show us what you can do when you
DON'T have to play CEO all week." If he gets better---on a level with
Bobby---fine and dandy. If not.......oh, well.

Yeah, that makes sense. Maybe BV figgered that letting Kyle drive for a
while is just part of the cost of doing the deal. Good point!

My guess is that it'll be contingent on how well the car does in
the second half of the season. It's not in the T35, and it's more
than 300 points out, so even if Terry Labonte has a stellar run,
it's not going to be back in the T35. Kyle has DNQ, I beleive,
3 races. If he continues to DNQ towards the end of the year,
then I would not be surprised if someone else has the seat come
Daytona 500 time. OTOH, if Kyle can reliably make the show, then
leaving him in it would be, if not the best solution, at least
one they can work with.

Kyle's statement may even be an expression of confidence in
just that situation "I know I will run well enough to be in the
car next year".

Unfortunately for Kyle, he's not a particularly good qualifier,
and towards the end of the year we're likely to see a few extra
cars in the fields (RCR might run a few test races with the #33,
for example), which will make it very hard for him...

John

If you think you're going to get any of that go-juice
