Dead heat finish

Dead heat finish

Some of you old timers help refresh an old man's memory.

My daughter asked me if there has ever been a dead tie finish in a
NASCAR race. I don't recall a dead heat for first place, but I
vaguely remember one. I believe it was for third place and the names
sticking in my mind are Cale Yarborough and Buddy Baker but I can't
swear to that. I think it was at Daytona, but I can't swear to that
either.

I have no idea what year, but I do remember looking at the photo and
thinking it was indeed a dead heat. This was obviously well before
the days of electronic scoring.

Anybody else remember this and can you fill in the fuzzy details?

Thanks.

"Testing and qualifying for the first Daytona 500 began on Feb. 7,
1959, and 15 days later, the inaugural running of the 200-lap
race delivered a finish that was almost too good to be true.

"The race, which ran caution-free, ended in a dead heat,
with Johnny Beauchamp and Lee Petty crossing the stripe
together."

Dunno if that's the only one.

Nope. I know about that one. It took them three days to figure it
out, but Lee Petty eventually got the win. The one I was thinking of
went in the record books as a dead heat finish.

Thanks to my "Forty Years of Stock Car Racing" book, I found it--and
this old man's memory is better than I thought it was. It was indeed
Cale Yarborough and Buddy Baker for third place at Daytona. The race
was the 1974 Firecracker 400. That's the one noted for Pearson faking
a problem at the white flag in order to induce Petty to go around him,
then powering back for a slingshot win.

Oh, DOH! I knew that. I've seen the pix and (now that you
mention it) remember the Rest of the Story (tm).

The bicycle track racers do that all the time. They'll
come to a dead halt and try to trick the other guy into
taking the lead. NASCAR isn't the only aero sport. :o)
