Simmons - RPG - Gateway - Funsies

Here is my RPG (funsies only... mebbee some MV points, we'll see...) for the
NNS at Gateway International tonight. Since I will be at the track watching
quals, I couldn't use the results to figger into my RPG. I did watch the
practice sessions and from what I've seen, it should be a good competitive
race. There are lots of young guns who are anxious to make a name for
themselves and are probably grateful there aren't many big guns from Cup who
are contending. I am especially looking forward to seeing young Mr. Logano.

Here are the top five (in no particular order)...

Sorenson
Edwards
McMurray
Bowyer
Wimmer

Using my secret, patented, proprietary formula, Logano figgered into my top
five, but based on his inexperience, I have excluded him from my RPG. I may
regret this. Sorenson has in the past dominated at Gateway and ran away
from the pack last year. Edwards and McMurray are MO boyz, so they have an
incentive to want to win in front of the "hometown" crowd. The same could
be said for the Wallace's, but I don't think they will be a factor.

The winner will be Sorenson (again).

Top rookie will be Logano or Cassill, I will go with Logano.

Complete race report follows tomorrow.

Mike

Well, I wasn't gonna, because I probably won't get to see the
race (I'll be out when it starts, and sleeping when it ends.
God only knows what warped reasoning makes them think 8:30pm
_central time_ is a good time to start the race).

Anyway, I'll RPG the Cup guys will again dominate the T5:

Edwards
Reutimann
Bowyer
Ragan
Sorenson

(as per Mike's standard practice, not in any particular order)

The top finishing non-Cup driver will be Mike Bliss.

The worst finishing Cup driver (full or part time) will
be Kenny Wallace.

Joey Logano will take a lesson from his mentor Kyle Busch, and
wrinkle his racecar at some point, the top finishing rookie
will be Cale Gale (in Kevin Harvick's car).

Marcos Ambrose will finish the most positions ahead of where
he starts.

Derrick Cope will make the race and will be the first car
out of the race.

Winner will be Reutimann.

John

(there, just since it doesn't count I've done 2 races worth
of RPGs. That should count for a few MVM points)

Good pick, pig! At least I was able to see Cuzzin Carl do his backflip in
person.

Dunno, do you freeze under pressure?

Are you going to the Brickyard next week? You can walk and avoid the
traffic.... lucky dog!

Brickyard was Re: Simmons - RPG - Gateway - Funsies

Yeah, I am---this will be my very first in-person race. (Well, on this
scale, anyhow :)

I've got friends coming down from Chicago, though, who can't walk that far
(about a mile and a half) so have a reservation with a friend from church
for a parking spot in her yard---she's two blocks from the track.

Anybody from here that's going to the Brickyard anytime that can do an
eleven block walk with no prob is welcome to park at my place, no
charge....just let me know in advance you're coming.....

Anybody got pointers for me? What to take, what not to take? What to do?
I'd be more than happy to collect all the words of wisdom offered....

Bring plenty of water and make sure your cooler isn't too big. They have
cooler size restrictions. My cooler will hold about six water bottles so I
freeze three and pre-chill three and fill the rest with ice.

I assume that you will go early and make the day of it, right? Be sure to
watch all the crazy stuff that's going on around you. For me, the race was
only a "part" of the Brickyard experience. If you have time, walk around
the RV area across from the track or in the RV area in the infield. We
think we are NASCAR nuts in the NG, but you will see at the RV area,
"shrines" erected to their favorite driver.

Be sure to bring a seat cushion as yer butt will be undoubtedly sore after
sitting for so long. Eat at home right before you go and bring snacks if
you have room 'cause as you may expect, food and drinks at the track are
somewhat pricey.

If you have a scanner with headphones, take it. Tune to the MRN frequency
and you will have a good ply by play of the race. The only drawback to the
Brickyard is there are no really good seats. The way the track is designed
with the stands on both sides of the front straight, you have limited
visibility, that's why the MRN hook-up is good. Wear light clothing and
comfy walking shoes as you will prolly want to stroll the vendor booths with
extend almost a mile by the track.

To me the Brickyard was an event of a lifetime in one of racing's most
hallowed arenas. The race was great, but the other entertainment (crazy
people) was even better.

Finally, don't be in a big hurry to get home. The traffic jam after the
race is horrendous.

Have fun and let us know how you liked it.

Mike

Re: Brickyard was Re: Simmons - RPG - Gateway - Funsies

Don't have a scanner and can't afford one.....I'm kind of reconciled to
DVR'ing the race and not having a clue what happened until I watch it that
night. :)

I do want to try to experience what's going on; CDB is doing a pre-race
concert, and that's way down by the museum. We'll have to see how we do on
walking that far. I do have a cooler that will meet restrictions and will
put in cold pop and frozen water bottles as well as a couple of cold wet
washcloths in baggies to stave off overheating.....was thinking about
tucking a couple of pbj's in my tote bag since pbj's don't care if they're
cold, hot or confused in between, they don't spoil and don't care if they
get squished :)

Folks I work with have said that one should walk down to the campgrounds on
Saturday night, but once again, dunno if we're up for that. We'll have to
see. Of course, unlike the race, for that one can haul one's lawn chair
with and sit and rest any time it seems like a good idea, so might
happen.....

The beauty of the parking space we have is even less for the proximity and
more for the "friend from church" aspect. I'm expecting to do a bit of
sitting and socializing at Kathy's after the race, introducing her to my
Chicago friends, and catching up as I've not seen her since May or so (we go
to different masses, but she's a major part of the RCIA program).

Have camera and earplugs ready. I'm prepared to have fun; prepared to say
"wow, that's so cool, I can't wait until next year" but also prepared to say
"well, that was interesting, but once was enough." We'll see how it goes.

Could turn out I'm too much of an old fart for that size of track, and next
year I'll be looking to score tickets at O'Reilly for truck/nationwide and
watching the Brickyard from home. I'm open to the whole spectrum of
possibilities. :)

Rent?

Borrow?

Take a radio so you can hear the broadcast?

I wouldn't go to a live race without a scanner.
It fills in SO many details. You can listen
to the TV broadcasters and find out what is
happening on the rest of the track that you
can't see.

(OK--good seats at Bristol or Martinsville
can see just about everything ...).

I agree Marty! Since I got my scanner two years ago, it has increased my
enjoyment of a live race immensely. You can't possible keep track of all
the action on a big track and that's where the MRN coverage helps. They
have dozens of eyes staioned around the track and the announcers will keep
you up to date on whats happening. I will usually tune to a certain car
freq from time to time to see what their pit startegy will be.

At Gateway this weekend a crash caused a red flag. While stopped I listened
in to Cousin Carl's conversation with the crew chief and spotter and learned
of their strategy for the remainder of the race. It wuz cool!

The only downside to renting is that the scanners at the track are pretty
pricey. Two rentals and you can own yer own. I bit the bullet and bought a
Radio Shack cheapie that I am very pleased with.

Re: Brickyard was Re: Simmons - RPG - Gateway - Funsies

I had the pleasure of going to the '87 Indy 500, back when it still
was a real race. 8^)

I was lucky enough to procure a seat in turn 4 which allowed me to see
down the front straight. I loved it.

The best part was when Mario Andretti blew his engine in front of us
and the whole section jumped up cheering.

The worst part was watching the tire come off in turn 3 that jumped
the fence and beheaded a fellow fan.

Other favorite moments were strolling up and down beer can alley and
laughing at all the crazy antics. I was amazed at how many people were
outside the facility wearing "What Race?" t-shirts. They were there
for the party and it lasted from Thursday afternoon until the race. I
hope to do it again someday...when they get back to real racing. 8^)
