CTS at IRP

CTS at IRP

I watched the truck race from IRP last night. Two things
really struck me about it, that should be of urgent concern
to NASCAR:

1) it started just after 8, eastern, and ended just after 10.
In other words, it started early enough that everyone, including
kids & old folks, could watch and enjoy the whole thing.

2) there was a lot of real racing - Benson and Hornaday side
by side for the lead, for lap after lap after lap (they probably
ran side by side for 50 laps out of the 200 run). Same deal
thruout the pack - guys had to work, persistantly, to make
the pass; and when they did the passee was just as likely to
start working the inside to get the place back. It's been
years since we've seen that sort of racing in Cup.

If NASCAR is serious about being in the entertainment business,
they should be looking at why the CTS race was entertaining,
and how that can be used to improve Cup races.

But here is the riddle.......
And keep in mind, I'm not debating who has the better races...
You know I think the cup races are for the most part too long...

NASCAR can sell 100,000 tickets to a cup show at Loudon.
They couldn't give tickets away to the Busch or Truck race....
So they were forced to combine them with the Cup races.

So to us, that look at the door to door racing, as "real racing"....
that isn't selling.
The stuff people bitch about.... sells 100,000 seats at triple money.

People will spend 500 to see a Bristol race, they sell over 150,000
tickets, every race,
but they won't spend 30 bucks to watch a truck race....

So it's tough to say that NASCAR isn't 'entertaining' the people
that go to the 'main events'....

Unfortunately sad but true. That's why I'd rather go to my local short
track, only have to spend maybe 20 bucks, and watch real racing than go to a
Cup event, have to spend at least 500 bucks, and have to sit through a race
with a seemingly fixed outcome.

After the debacle at Indy today, I think the simple solution to improving
the entertainment value of the Indy race would be to move it over to IRP.

I think some features of the COT came from CTS--notably
the front splitter and the general boxiness.

I think Toyota was very shrewd to start their NASCAR
racing program. They are on their way to dominating
all three series, aren't they?

Which pretty much says those are not important features with
respect to creating entertaining racing.

But, take Gibbs out of the equation, and where are they? It
would seem their shrewd move was in convinving Gibbs to be
their headline team.

You may not be entirely wrong about that. :o)

One of their shrewd moves.

I predicted three wins for them in Cup last year. I was
wrong. They're doing quite well this year. Pretty
darned impressive (and, yes, with all due credit to
Gibbs and KyBu).
