Mrs. Chicken!

Mrs. Chicken!

I saw a special while I was at Mom's all about Julia Child and how she hated
cooking. She sucked at it, to be honest. She'd be the first to admit. But
she so wanted to impress her husband. And boy, did she wind up impressing!

So what if it falls on the floor? Pick it up. No one will know.

Thomas Jefferson's ice cream! Oh the joys of butter and cream.

I have to admit it, but I remember seeing this original broadcast back in
the 1960s. I've always been a Julia junkie!

The funny thing is, you can tell she isn't sure what the hell she's talking
about once she's in front of television cameras. I mean, she knows that's a
roaster but she has to fill up air time and suddenly she's not sure? So
she's going on and on about the various chickens. I love it! But I really
loved the shot where she dropped the chicken on the floor (I haven't found
that one, yet, but PBS did last month) and said, "Oh, no one will know!"
LOL

Yes, I saw that one, too, on the original broadcast. I never missed an
episode, as it came on the Cleveland PBS station shortly after I got home
from work.

No pun intended, but that old canard has been around for years. And
although no recording of it exists and Child and her publicity people
claimed that THAT particular event NEVER happened, people still swear on
their mothers and children that they saw it with their own eyes.

Think back carefully to the show you saw on PBS. Did you really see her
drop a chicken on the floor?

The "Oh, no one will know" concept comes from one of Child's very first
programs. While flipping a pan of food, having first provided a caveat
to viewers that success at the task could not be guaranteed, half of the
pan's contents landed on the stove top. Picking the food up and piecing
it back together, Child intoned that it's all right, cooing that the
cook is alone in the kitchen, so "Who's to know?"

It DID actually happen. I saw it on PBS a month or so ago. It's just not
commonly seen footage. I saw it. Snopes be damned. They don't just offer
it up for youtube and the like.

Yes, it is. She really didn't like to cook when she started out as a
newlywed in her 40s. LOL Then she tried to cook for her husband Paul and
discovered cookbooks weren't "friendly". They said what we all know what to
do. Whisk 2 eggs then whisk into the mixture with milk to make a batter.
She didn't undertand... whisk and then, what? What exactly are we doing
here?

She was the first to give step by step ingredients. Do this, then do that.
I've said before my grandmothers recipes don't make much sense. Julia was a
"newbie" cook, so she wrote about how to do it. Step by step.

I loved her shows later in life with Jacques Pepin. Gave her time to make
fun of herself and to have fun cooking with another good chef. She never
called herself a chef. Bon Appetit

In the Julia tradition, you must include an omelet and bouef Bourguignon.

Re: Mrs. Chicken!

Sister Julia, Child of God started my love affair with serious
cooking.
I adored her and read her cookbook before attempting Duck a l'Orange
- took six hours and dirtied every dish in my kitchen. Two weeks later
I cooked Betty Crocker's Orange Duck. Took two hours including clean
up and the (same) guests couldn't tell the difference!

Seriously, Julia was my initiation to lamb - Leg of (with dijon
mustard and garlic) and Navarin (sp) de Printemps. I had never tasted
it. Fell in love and still use the stew recipe.

Sounds good! But I wish I knew where I'd be at what point. Hard to plan.
And Mom might not understand why I'm making all that chicken stock.... LOL
