Better Than Penzeys?

Reply from: Sheldon

Today I discovered that Penzey's no longer sells MSG (yeah, I know,
but I like it), so in my searching for another source I found this...
for many items this might be a better deal for some folks, shipping
costs are better too. I haven't tried their products yet so I can't
vouch as to quality... but they're sold on Amazon (that's where I
found them) so I imagine they're fine.

So do we in reasonable amounts. Though it has sodium, it's less than
tablesalt so used carefully, you can reduce the amount of table salt (for
taste) needed if you arent MSG reactive (which we arent).

MSG does indeed help to reduce salt content in foods because much less
is needed. And no one is allergic to MSG... MSG occurs naturally in
many foods, even in breast milk. People have the same reaction to
ingesting too much ordinary table salt too, eat an entire bag of salty
chips and you'll get the same reaction as from ingesting too much
MSG. The reason it's called Chinese Restaurant Syndrome is because
Chinese cooks have a heavy hand with MSG and NACL, a double whammy....
telling the wait person "No MSG" won't help, because of all the table
salt.

I will be ordering soon, their MSG costs a fourth what Penzeys used to
charge, just need to go through the other items before placing my
order... I already know I'll be ordering the granulated garlic, a
better price than Penzeys, and since it's a manufactured item I'll bet
it's the same no matter where you buy it. The only drawback I can see
is if you can't use such large sizes.

I haven't bought MSG in a long time, but as I recall
it's really cheap, and cheapest at Chinese food stores.
Are there none near you? I'd think that would be
cheaper than mail-order.

Uh huh. I've been convinced for years that msg is why my stirfried
veggies taste better than anybody else's. I buy a jar of Ajinomoto
every now and then at an asian market and it's never enough $ to
notice. But then I'm not one to buy in volume anyway (except for rice
and beans). -aem

Hi, Sheldon..I don't know what Penzeys charge for MSG, but you can (at least
in Oz) purchase it in a larger quantity around 500g) from most Asian food
outlets..and is very cheap as well. . com es under another descriptive name
than MSG... I would need to look at a bag of it..The actual name escapes
me...

A couple of months. I'm still in fido of course as well. Before we left
for the states (now back home in Virginia Beach, VA) I got to see Brisbane
and Townsville. It was nice to see OZ agaian and other than Darwin! Not
that Darwin is bad, but I've been there about 6 times now.

Yup, got the trick from a Doc of Don's. Don is 'sodium restricted' but
_not_ severely so.
If he stays within 2,000mg a day, he's fine. With many of today's products,
you have to be a bit careful to keep within that, but it's not too hard.
Others with serious sodium reduction diets, have far more problems. So yes,
a careful use of just a little MSG, allows for him to not miss the other
table salt in a dish. We normally aim for about 1,500mg a day.

Agreed on a true allergy. At least I've not heard of any who actually had
that, though some misdescribe their reaction as that. It is however true
that some who are not particularily salt reactive, do have a strange
reaction to MSG. Some racial groups more prone to it (American Indian and
Nordic I think?)

Too bad you don't have a good 'asian grocery' near you where MSG is easy and
cheap. Oh, if you have any hispanic stores near, they often carry it too
(msg and granulated garlic). Still, good deal there at that site! I marked
it for my own perusal next time I need some spice refills.

My ex-SIL who is half Irish and half Filipino got a reaction she
didn't like from it. If I remember correctly, it was something like a
racing heartbeat. I could be completely wrong on that.

Thats one of the 2 reactions I've heard of, and it could be a sodium
overload or it could just be MSG. Many people tolerate it well in small
amounts but not in larger ones.

Oh the other common reaction is headaches, sometimes to migrane levels.

A few years ago we went to a new CHinese restaurant where the food was
SO delicious (MSG/Unami!) we both ate more than we should have. Halfway
home in the car I felt agitated and as though I had some kind of bugs
crawling under the skin of my arms and trunk. It was an absolutely
horrible feeling and the last time I knowingly ate anything containing MSG.
