Kurt Vonnegut Chicken Recipe

Kurt Vonnegut Chicken Recipe

There is, remarkably, a newly published work by Vonnegut
titled _Armageddon In Retrospect_ . Buried in there, as
part of an anecdote involving troops in Europe, is a chicken
recipe that goes something like follows:

Cut up a large chicken, brown the pieces olive oil / butter
for five minutes, then add a mixture of sherry and tomato paste
and simmer for 30 minutes.

Sounds pretty obvious, but I haven't heard of exactly a sherry /
tomato paste mixture as a simmering sauce. Is this a known
formulation? And has anybody tried it?

I have a wonderful recipe from A New Way To Cook, that has both sherry
and tomatoes in it. Also sherry vinegar... It's a wonderful dish...

I might have another recipe with a similar combo... No tomato paste
though for either recipe, but the combo is a very pleasing one.

Yes, the tomato paste part is (to me) intriguing, since it makes
for a thicker sauce. It's pretty obvious it should work.

I make a Greek stew, Stifado, that has both tomato paste and sherry in it.
Quite nice.

Thanks. So the combination is not unheard of.

Missed the Vonnegut chicken recipe. Would have much favored the Rube
Goldberg or the Salvadore Dali recipes.

Sherry most certainly goes with chicken... so why not try adding
tomato paste too?

If this is Vonnegut's recipe, I expect more sherry went into the
cook than the chicken.;)

I adore him. He would only come and speak at NC State if they made
a special provision that allowed him to drink bourbon on the rocks and
smoke while he did so. And he pissed off a whole bunch of people when
he spoke. Go, Kurt. Have you read Hocus Pocus? It's a fairly late one.
I had this feeling he had grown up a bunch as a writer since "Breakfast
of Champions" with its drawings of underpants and American Flags and
assholes.

You gotta admit, the tap dancing and farting alien (what's his name,
"Zog"?) was one of the all-time great visuals.

Oh, yeah. :) I really have no criticism of anything Vonnegut has done. It
was just neat to see his personal development reflected in his writing.

generation!!
