Fairway?
I've never come across something you *can't* find there.

They has some beauties in my local gourmet market. Unfortunately, they were
$60/lb.

I am happy to say, given the fact that I usually see even higher prices,
that I can make a nice little repast with much less than a pound!

Sure, but do you need a pound? What does a couple ounces look like?

No, of course not. But the price gave me a bit of sticker shock. I've never
bought them before so I had no idea they were that pricey.

A couple of ounces looks like 4 or 5 mushrooms. If I had a recipe in mind
that called for a few ounces I might have relented and got past it. Had they
been a lot cheaper, I might have splurged and bought some just to experiment
with.

Whenever you get the chance and see some *real* saffron, work
out the price per pound! The weight of a package is usually a
fraction of an ounce.

I have some real saffron. Expensive but you usually use just a few threads
at a time. I make piaei a few times a year and keep it on hand for that.

My first honeymoon was in Spain in '83. Brought back a 6 oz. jar of saffron
that cost me about $25 in a small village near Toledo. That lasted about 1o
years and I was pretty liberal with its application.

Ah, I see. I don't know if they are cultivated ‹ I don't think so.
They are elusive to hunt. Until your eyes become accustomed to what
they're seeking, they just disappear into the leaves. :-) Labor
intensive.

Got it! I understand the sticker shock. I buy a lot of my herbs and
spices in bulk at my co-op where a pound of, say, parsley, might be $35.
Well, a pound of dried parsley is probably a couple gallons of it. I
don't need that much. :-)

Treat yourself to a few and see how you like them. :-)

Actually, there may be fresher and somewhat more dried out morels.
Obviously, you get more of the latter per pound (or fraction thereof).
I need to go look for some in the Boston area soon....
