Kitchenaid Meat Grinder Attachment Plates

Kitchenaid Meat Grinder Attachment Plates

The KitchenAid meat grinder attachment comes with 3/16th and 1/4"
plates. I'd like to get 3/8" and/or 1/2" plates for it.
Unfortunately they have proprietary shape: round, with square
ears 180 degrees apart (3 and 9 o'clock as mounted).

Anybody know where I can get larger-holed plates for this thing?

Maybe you could just get extras of the available sizes
and drill them out by hand to the size you want?
Spacing of holes might be a problem.

I don't think the _shape_ of the holes matter. They could be
kinda random - they just need to be bigger.

I'd have to befriend somebody at a machine shop.

Did I say anything about the _shape_ of the holes?
I assumed they'd be round, if they were drilled.

> I'd have to befriend somebody at a machine shop.

I was thinking (but did not post, previously)
that in a machine shop a tool called a brochette
could be used to make other shapes of holes,
such as square. I'd guess the sides should be
oriented at an angle to the cutting blades,
so that it would have a scissors-like action.
That might be an improvement over round holes,
because it would have more of a cutting action
than a chopping action.

I was _implying_ that I could connect 2 holes if spacing were to
be a problem.

I looked for a couple of years, and couldn't find any.

It is. I did that to3/8", and it was quite tricky, even on a drill
press. But the resulting overlapping holes work just fine for coarse
grinding for chili, when I don't feel up to cubing ten pounds of
chuck. 8;)

POSSIBLY, this would work; you'd have to find out the specific dimensions:

That looks like it would work. I thought I already had one like
that, but it must have been to another grinder because I looked
for it before I posted.

Anybody have one of those Osters and can tell me the hole size
and diameter of plate from ear to ear?

I owned an Oster Kitchen Center from 1981 until last year, when it wore
completely out. The gears were plastic and were no longer available for
repair. The plate shown is the inner plate, sort of a "pre-grind" plate.
The plates that go on the outside of that one and determine the cut of
the meat are the same as the ones you already own. I never tried to use
the pregrind plate to actually grind meat but it might be worth a try if
you're trying for larger diameter meat pieces. Try a thrift store, that
is where mine went and there were several others on the shelf with it.

Hated to give the old thing up, stronger motor than is on most mixers,
etc. today.

George

Unfortunately, the KA plates are 1-15/16 inches in diameter without the ears,
and the Oster plates are 2-1/8. I just found out the hard way (thank you, eBay!

That's a good source for all things sausage-related, but not for
the KA grinder plates, unfortunately.
