Cookware sale - AllClad & more

I got a flyer today from Cookware & More (www .cookwarenmore,com ) for a
sale that includes mostly AllClad but also a few other things. They sell
seconds, and in my experience the "flaws" are very minor cosmetic
problems. Very good prices, most items are 50-60% of retail. They have
some sets, too. Hard to beat if you are looking for AllClad. If I could
justify another pan I would buy something!

I had been thinking of buying some fry pans in their Copper-Core line. But
wait. It says not dishwasher safe!? Why? I put all pans in the dishwasher
and don't want to buy any I can't. See:

Any pan that has aluminum is not dishwasher safe (unless the aluminum is
totally sealed by other metals). The reason is that dishwasher detergent
dissolves aluminum, albeit slowly. I am not sure about copper.

I have the "stainless" line in which the aluminum is covered with
stainless, and it is fine in the DW.

I now regularly use an 8" All-Clad fry pan with the aluminum bottom. I
always put it in the dishwasher. Okay, the aluminun finish is totally shot.
But I don't care about the look of the bottom of the pan.

If this is the line that used to be exclusive to Williams Sonoma, the
reason they say not dishwasher safe is because os the visible copper
band around the lower part of the pan sides. I had a couple of these
pieces, and threw them in the dishwasher anyway for afew years of use
-- all it did was darken (tarnish) the copper bands.

But I have seen ads recently for 100% stainless pans which say not
dishwasher safe. How can that be? Stainless is stainless. Can it be
that they're concerned about rivet heads or something like that?

I'll look for the most recent example...--ah hah! Sur la Table catalog
that came yesterday. Sur la Table Tri-Ply Roasting Pan, page 8,
"stainless steel surfaces with an aluminum core," "oven safe to 500
F," "Hand wash." Why?

Looking at the write-up for the 8" fry pan I see the copywriter is kind of
hypocritical. It includes "and easy maintenance of stainless steel." and
then the "Handwash only, not dishwasher safe." I wonder what non-easy
maintenance is?

It's the only place I've purchased my, and my family's AllClad. After
purchasing approx. 30 various pans, only one arrived in really bad
shape. No problem. Called them, returned to them and they sent another
one. Ironically, is a pan that I don't use very much at all.
